this is messed up, I was backing up, stopped, put the car in drive and all of a sudden the instrument cluster went dead and the car would not go more than 10 mph and will not shift gears...

Does anyone know what this might be...

sounds like your locked in safe-mode?

huh? these cars have a safe mode, this is a mazda not windows... (rlaugh)
seriously, how would I unlock this? I tried resetting the computer and nothing...it is at the dealership now, hopefully my extended warranty will cover it.

Alternator/ battery charge. Get the battery tested or try a new one, also get the alternator tested as well.

From there, try to pull the codes off the car, see what it says. Once you do that, also try a complete system reset (disconnect battery, turn ignition to on, press brake pedal, leave for about 20-30 minutes to ensure full computer poer drain).

If you don't want feedback NOOB, don't ask questions!

I've heard some talk of A/T's having some sort of safe mode. I think they lock in 2nd though.

I wasn't being negative, all I was doing is laughing at the simalarity. If you want to be an ass, go ahead... (scratch)...lighten up dude (drinks)

Notice the rest of the post...this is the first I have heard of it and I also asked how I might correct it...

well...the dealership informed me today that the tranny is shot. It will need to be replace before they can diagnose the instrument panel. It could still be related to the tranny though. Waiting to see if the extended warranty will cover it, it should but you know how they work. Otherwise, they quoted $1500 to replace the tranny...ouch

We shall see...
