WTB: a reliable car for $2000

My friends looking for a car and I'd like to introduce him into the mazda family.
He has 2000$ to spend, cash of course.
Mods and speed are not important, just looking for a reliable car to get him to work and school every day.

Looking for something in the tri-state area, but We'd be willing to drive pretty far out of the way for a good deal.
