Woohoo! Autocrossers and HPDE enthusiasts sound off

I've been there more than a few times. As for the little cruise I did this evening, it went really well. The amount of grip these tires have is phenomenal. Even though the wheels weigh about 2 bls less per corner, I couldn't really tell the difference. I know that these Kumho's weigh a bit more than the stock tires, so I'd say I broke even on the rotational mass. My drive consisted of a road with a lot of various turns and elevation changes, the Mazda and I had a great time. As much as I hate to do it though, this is my dedicated set of wheels and tires for auto x. So the stocks will be going back on until mid August.

So these are nice..... I'm happy.

I really like the Kumho tires on my 2 as well, I am running the same size. They seem to be a great value for the cash. Are you going to lower your car? It still looks like the stock height.

Oh yes I do planing lowering it. I plan on running in the ST class next year so well see what route I'll be taking. I'd prefer some adjustable konis with some springs, but coils are tempting.

I believe youre right Im thinking the 2 will get clobbered as well as the mini weighs the same and has more power, and the 3's can make up for it with power and handle almost as well.

Wont keep me from trying though.

Looks like those Kumho XS are pretty light weight and have a pretty low treadwear rating. How are they as a street tire?

I had a chance to drive the tires in snow and they seem to do pretty well for what they are. I have had the set on the car since January and with the street driving and Autocrossing they should hold up about a year.

I drove (well tried to) on my RE-11's which were at the wear bars in the snow. Didn't really work. The tread just filled with snow so it was a slick.

I can't wait for the fall to start. I mainly autocross with the Clemson sports car club. I design the courses and I will probably be running the Miata and the 2. Not sure if I am up to swapping wheels on both cars in one day though.

I know the toyo r1r's which im going to get will crack and be damaged if driven near freezing temperatures...cant even store them in a garage in the winter so I will have to take them to my inlaws basement.

To those who want to drive an autox course on stock tires...let me tell you they are slick...its amazing that the stock tires cannot handle 100 ponies ;-)...not too mention I tried driving it like the mazda3 and it wasnt working out too well for me...so I slowed it down on this run and she did ok...then...realizing I was a couple seconds better I tried to finish it off on the final slalom and came in way too fast....quite funny in my opinion...on the external video the class winning scion runs first so fast forward or just watch it.

Thanks for the videos... I also have AutoX on stock All-Seasons and I completely agree - they are slick! I am looking forward to a nice set of grippy tires in September...

And, Uh, no offense, but thats a poorly designed course for safety! (or at least timed poorly) Look about at the 30-31 second mark... good thing you didnt take it too hot into that corner and spin out!

Yes theoretically if you plow through the wall of doom as we call it you can broadside the next car, I believe the people that walk the course think the same thing, but once they drive it they never mention it afterwards as they must like it. This course is one of the few courses that does not change on the circuit so the times can be compared and records kept (40 years running I believe). It is still a blast to drive though...If you want to see a pro do it watch this evo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA4RztiLBb0

also...there is a yump in the middle of the course so if you have a race suspension you can get all the wheels off of the ground (the evo does it)

That Evo was MOVING!!! That's pretty cool that there are records that are 40 years old. It's a cool little course that isn't too technical, but at the same time still holds it's own.
