Wire in radar detector?

:
2002 Mazda Protege5
I was just wondering if anyone on here knew of a way to wire in my radar detector/fuzz buster so it doesnt have to be plugged into the cigarette lighter,(which looks so stupid) so it turns on everytime the car is on. Help! Please!

You got couple options. You can wire into back of cig lighter, remote turn on on head unit, or go straight to the fuse box.

Do a search...
Easiest is probably getting power from HU's power wire and ground to vehicle's chassis. But that involves removing the HU...
I wired it into the cig lighter, just don't like to mix radar detector with audio components take the cup holder and console surrounding the shifter out then you will have access to cig lighter's wires.

If you want to connect to cig lighter wires, look behind it, there are only two wires, they were green/black and black if memory serves, green/black is the power wire, tap into it, then ground the other wire to chassis.

For fog light, search for it in the how-to section "how-to: fog light always on" It's pretty easy and def a very cool mod, I posed some pics of wiring in their as well. :D

and best part is, when i want to have the detector go off with its own speaker, i just will have to unplug the headphone. shall keep you guys posted, won't happen for a few weeks, but its within radar of list of things to do.

Are you saying you want to have your detector go off through car speakers??? I like my detector, but not THAT much. (headshake

Wearing it on my ear would drive me crazy, too, lol, you are nuts.

i was wondering how exactly you would go about accessing the back of the cig lighter, and where exactly in the fuse box you could wire it too

if you have anh amp you could probably splice into the remote lead, that would save the hassle of removing the HU or dealing with the fuse box

if not just run the wire to the fuse box and pull out the radio fuse, put stripped wire over the hole and push the fuse back in

i am also interested... ^^^
by this you mean just stripping both wires, amp remote and radar wire, and twisting them together with a butt or cap? and the radar should get power?

Just wire into the back of the cig lighter. Less painful, and you don't have to mess with your car audio stuff. Its only 2 wires.

then you have to take dash off though to get to the back of the cig lighter right? got any pics?

This was the very first mod I ever did to my car. Ahh...those days...haha, anyways, take off the center console cup holder arm rest thing that surrounds your shifter and goes between your seats. from there you can get under the cig lighter. Just cut off the electrical tape on there already, and splice it into there. Voila! I forget which wire is which. It's in the fog light mod thread tho, I think.

What he said.

I used a terminal strip from radio shack. I put power (with an in-line 25amp fuse) to one terminal and ground to another, and daisy chained the connections all the way down, so I could hook up any accessory I wanted.

I hooked up my digital gauges, radar detector, amp remote wire, AFC, etc to this terminal strip and had everything nice and tidy behind the dash.
