I had my Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3 installed just prior to the first snowfall... this is the sets second season and they are wearing well and gripping very well also. The size I am using is the 195/60HR-15, which gives me a slightly taller sidewall and perhaps more compliance overall in the tire itself, which would aid in the winter grip. Again, I have no complaints, and am very happy with their performance.
In the past I have always purchased Goodyear winter tires and have been always happy. To date, I have owned (on several different vehicles) Goodyear: Ultra Grips, Ultra Grip 5, Ultra Gripe Ice (same as 5, just new name), and Eagle Ultra Grip GW2... this also represents basically the entire Goodyear line-up of winter tires. The best by far have been the Eagles (GW2 and GW3), with the best of the rest being the Ultra Grip 5 or Ice for the average vehicle, when speed rating is not a concern.
I have another new vehicle, and the dealer here has changed hands and I found the prices for the Goodyears far to high, so I looked elsewhere for some alternatives. I chose a set of Hankook W400's, size 205/60HR-15 (for a Daewoo Leganza, not the Protege5), and have been very happy. Overall they seem to be on par with the Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3's, except cost about $45 CAD per tire cheaper. I would recommend the Hankooks for their winter capabilities and speed rating, but will not be able to determine the longevity until the end of the winter season.
Hopefully this answers the previous question, and I am sorry to hear that someone is not happy with their Goodyears, as I have had a lot of good luck with them.
