I have the Thule rail system for this vehicle, and have borrowed roof boxes in the past.
I was thinking of getting my own, but I don't know where I would store this big box when not using it (very crowded garage in a rental house).
So I am interested in the idea of the roof bags instead- you can fold them up when not using them. Sure, they are less aerodynamic and not waterproof, but I can deal with that (shove my suitcases in a leaf bag first, etc).
However, I heard from a friend that putting a bag of luggage directly on the roof of the car can dent the roof inward. He says he and some friends went on a trip and rented a van, and had it dent under all the weight by the end of their trip. The bag, in my case, would be attached to the Thule rails, but the middle weight would most definitely be resting on the car. I never thought about this before- is this a bad idea? How are roof bags supposed to work? Do people put up a rack/grill sort of thing first that the bag rests on?
