Will a roof bag dent the 5?

I have the Thule rail system for this vehicle, and have borrowed roof boxes in the past.

I was thinking of getting my own, but I don't know where I would store this big box when not using it (very crowded garage in a rental house).
So I am interested in the idea of the roof bags instead- you can fold them up when not using them. Sure, they are less aerodynamic and not waterproof, but I can deal with that (shove my suitcases in a leaf bag first, etc).

However, I heard from a friend that putting a bag of luggage directly on the roof of the car can dent the roof inward. He says he and some friends went on a trip and rented a van, and had it dent under all the weight by the end of their trip. The bag, in my case, would be attached to the Thule rails, but the middle weight would most definitely be resting on the car. I never thought about this before- is this a bad idea? How are roof bags supposed to work? Do people put up a rack/grill sort of thing first that the bag rests on?

Most of the roof bag are used directly on the roof since they do not have rigid base. If you have rack system then you might be able to use some plywood or even some 1X4 piece of wood as a bridge in between roof rack tower as the base and prevent the bag from touching the roof directly.

Its very possible to dent the roof if you did not load it properly.

Inno have collapsible roof bag that are designed for roof rack but they are almost the same price as hard sided roof rack.

There is a guy by me who posts on craigslist all the time for a roof box rental. I think he wants $60 per week or something like that. Maybe someone by you does the same? Best of both worlds, all the utility and you dont have to store it.
