Will a clogged cat cause pinging?

My wifes P5 just recently started running like a dog and sounding weird under load. It sounds fine in park.

When you dirve it under load the intake sounds wierd and it starts to ping really bad.

It has had a new timing belt last 5k miles and I doubt the belt slipped.

I would hate to have to check the cam timing, but on the other hand I looked into the price of a new cats...

DAMN they are expensive.

If one is clogged it seems like a pricey fix.

Might have to go for the header route but the car is a daily driver with kids. I don't want anything obnoxious to give everyone headaches.

The car did create a CEL for lean condition.

I checked for intake leaks but didn't find any.

How many miles? If it is the cat, dealers have to replace them for free up to 8 years or 80,000 miles.

In terms of checking the easiest things first, are you sure you didn't just get a tank of bad gas?

I hear what you are saying I have know 1 person in 30 years to get a bad tank of gas.

She always runs it near the gas light. I just put in about 5 gallons of new gas. It runs too good to be bad gas.

If you are not on a heavy load it just seems low on power.

Perhaps a clogged fuel sock? You're not supposed to run below about 1/4 of tank, or else you risk having your fuel pump pick up crap that has settled on the bottom of the gas tank.

You can check for a clogged cat relatively easily with an inexpensive vacuum gauge. Do you possess one?

damn, first time ive heard that we should not get under 1/4 of tank. I always wait for the light to come up before i go to a gas station.

i find it interesting that these little info are not very spread. Its been like 3 year that im on forums of all sort...golfmkv, evolutionm, iwsti, honda-tech, mazdas247, s2ki, bimmerpost, stanceworks. First time i see this is on a random thread about pinging.

sorry, i had to tell lol

I don't think it is the exhaust system.

AT idle = 20 in Hg stable

at 2000+rpm = 23 in Hg stable

I'm going to put a link to the vid.

I'm getting fustrated, I took it out again, still pings.

I guess I might need to check out the cam timing.

I hear about these coilpacks, do you think those might cause this?
I do not get any codes so I'm pretty fustrated right now.

The car runs good, it just pings.

Sorry to thread jack do they have this in Canada?

Is it a warranty or technical service bulletin for any car on for a specific year/model

Thanks

I don't know about Canada. This isn't a Mazda specific rule - it's a U.S. EPA rule that all central components to your emissions system are warranted for 8yrs/80k miles.

Canada might have something similar...

I haven't seen a suggestion to check the knock sensor. It is supposed to help prevent pinging.

I would try a seafoam treatment of the fuel system and engine.

We run rich at WOT and carbon up the system pretty well. That would cause 'pinging' under acceleration.

I'm pretty sure you'd see a CEL if the knock sensor was bad. Plus, I don't think they really ever go bad - it's not a super complicated circuit.

No CELS, thats what is getting me. I actually have OBDII data from a test drive. Nothing jumps out.

I'm going to check the cam timing.

I believe I can see all the marks by taking off the valve cover right?

If you have OBDII data from a test drive, it should have your ignition timing on there.

At least my scan tool does (Equus 3130)
