Why so many used MZSPD3s?

I suspect there are multiple reasons and most were brought up by earlier posters. The main reason I suspect is many people were so enamored by the MS3 they went and got one without every thinking about a budget. I have seen a few on eBay where the seller admitted that.
I could also see the MS3 being bought by those that by the new cool car every other year or so and have now moved onto something else fashionable. I always think there are not that many people like that, but there are lots they just do this throwing money away IMHO.
What I fear it may also be owners frustrated by the breaking mounts or the overall "roughness" of the MS3.

The main reason for our area DC, MD and NoVA is because of a lot of 16 year old kids that get them as their first car. After awhile, they can't make the payments so the parents tell them to sell it.
Same thing happens with the Evos and STIs.
A lot of rich parents just buy whatever their rich kid wants. Like Swamp said, this is not a Honda Civic with a $120 monthly payment car.
And no, I don't have anything against 16 year old owning an MS3 nor do I have something against rich people.

I do have something against a 16 year old driving a MS3...it's a kid with a high horsepower loaded gun!!!! He/she has no driving experience...hello??...what did we all do at 16 when we first got our cars...?
I think all first time drivers should drive a beater or a Corolla, Mazda3, Sentra, etc...you get the picture... LOL
Anyway, thats not what the thread is about...

I am quite a bit further south. Once I get up around "hoodbridge" the money bubble swells. I see kids driving cars *I* can't afford. It's nuts. Nothing like seeing a 16 year old looking male with 3 other 16 year old looking males in a $50,000 Lexus looking over at me in my super hot/dope/fly Mazda.

Anyway... I might sell my MS3 only if the gas prices go up to $10+ /gallon. (then get a Honda Fit or something ^_^;; )

I have gone back and forth about selling mine, but I decided to keep it. The reason I was selling mine is that I found out ~2 months after buying it that I need a second brain surgery and may have to be out on disability indefinitely. I know that this is an abberation, but it still applies. Stranger things have happened.

I have to agree with the "overextended" and the "change cars after a year" crowd but given we dont know how many of the MS3 that are out on the road are really up for sale and how that compares to the general car market the fact we think there are a lot for sale is a big WAG to begin with....it could very well be a statistical anomally for the particular OP area
Yep I agree and note that I think driving experience has more to do with it than age... combine lack of driving experience with lack of judgement and teen drivers become a volatile mix (and of course there are exceptions)

not to open old wounds, swampass, but what exactly were the details on those power window regulators? were they a mazda issue? +_+;
I very much agree, double for one that was repossessed as the driver might want to take out their anger at "The Man" on the clutch, etc.. before they take the car back.

i think a lot of people read about it and thought it was gonna be a super car and then after they ownd it a year they dont want the hard suspension and 6 speed .. i personaly would of like a more stylish car but i wouldnt ever sell it ha not really diggin the sleeper look but no tickets so far so

My girlfriend is thinking about getting rid of hers right now. She can afford it and loves the car, but the car has been a headache. First off, people KEEP hitting the back end of the car!! Last 2 cars she had, no accidents, this one, 6 months and been rear ended twice, and then some clown cut her off and slammed his brakes on and she nudged him... so 3 accidents in 6 months.
On top of that, when she first got the car, we had to bring it back to Mazda 4 times in less then 5k miles for suspension issues. Alot of the stuff I read about on here, loose bolts, rattling suspension, hell we had a bent strut and bad bushings in the rear in less then 5k! And its gotta go back in tomorrow for front suspension work because is squeals and grinds over speedbumps. Then it had to go in for the recalls. Now we have to bring it back to get the rotors either turned or replaced (~11800 miles on the car so the dealer will cover it) but the car is driven spirited occasionally, but we are in no way hard on the brakes. I have rattle coming from just about everything in the car, glovebox, rear hatch, seatbelts, something around the gauge cluster.
And finally, I read about everyone getting like 350-370 miles to a tank of gas, and she barely gets 300 if she's lucky. And this is without pushing it!!! So gas is eating up the pockets.
As for the harshness of the suspension, I personally love it, I don't like the noises and the sounds of things seeming like they are falling apart, but overall good handling and suspension. I LOVE the power, especially with the MS CAI and the Corksport Mount inserts and I would never dream of letting her trade it in if it could be trouble free for like 2k miles... that's it.. 2-5k miles WITHOUT having to bring it back to the dealer for something and it wouldn't be so bad. And I doubt its all cars it just seems like we may have gotten one of the bad apples.
So after the recent incident and now the brakes and the suspension that started making noises up front now, she is getting fed up with it especially making a large payment for a car with constant problems.
Unfortunately... she is now considering a Honda Fit or a Scion xB. She needs the utility of the hatch and plenty of space as she has a 3 year old and a dog. My vote goes for keep the MS3, but I don't get an input since I have my toy in the garage.
