I have to say that I agree with lm1986. In July '06 I bought a brand new, GS Mazda3. Loaded it up, undercoating, 3M, fog lights, all weather floor mats, mud flaps, tint, moon roof. I drove it off the lot with 7km on it. Zoom zoom...I thought.
It began at 9,000/km. I had the mysterious stall-out (that I've now read has not just happened to us) in the middle of rush hour. Stopped at a red light, the light turns green, press the gas, and stall. Shoot.....what to do? Put it in park.....turn the ignition off...turn ignition on...nothing. No turn over, no lights, no nothing. It was as if the battery were dead. ...turn the ignition off again...do this for 30 seconds. Finally, we start no problem....what the heck? Drive the rest of the way to work and wonder to myself, what the heck was that? I call Mazda that day, and they say they've never heard of this problem....ever. Just call back if it happens again. Somehow I now doubt that this was the first they heard of it. Since then, it's hasn't happened, but I worry about what'll happen when my warranty is up if it's acting like that at 9,000K?
Next is the faulty door locks. The car was broken into, so I suffer the damage to the door, and the vandal broke the middle consol (dent repair plus $160 for consol replacement, not to mention the items stolen from the truck and glovebox.) I do everything to avoid vandals. Park in a well lit area, have a club, nothing on the seats. I was very disappointed to hear that Mazda was installing door plates on a hush hush basis. We just had the car in the shop for an oil change the week before and no one ever mentioned the faulty locking system. Too bad the service was only provided on a "as requested" basis. It could have saved me over $300 if they had brought it to my attention. I still may have ended up with the dent repair, but I would've saved the items being ripped off. This car was targeted becuase theives know that Mazda was negleting this problem and the majority of Mazda owners did not have the plate required to prevent a break-in installed becuase Mazda was so tight lipped about it. I'm glad to hear there is a class action law suit in the works for BC. I hope this will go nation wide so owners can have some compensation from Mazda's neglect to advise their clients of such as issue.
From that point on, I've watch forms for updates and other chronic Mazda problems. One of which being the uneven tire wear. I've heard too many people say that the factory tires (I have Toyo) are just cheap. Well, if the tires were just cheap, I could understand them wareing out at 20,000K, but they should wear evenly. I have 2/32 left on the inside of all four tires and I'm at 48000K! These are all highway miles. Since they didn't mention the tire ware at the 12 month rotation (I have the paperwork to prove there were in the "green"), I now have all four tires which require replacement. The dealership says its a alignment issue, but countless forums state that the camber is off because this "economy" car is built as a little sportster, so it "hugs the road" and therefore wears tires at a ridiculous rate. And the Toyo tire warranty techs say its a Mazda issue.....you see the dilemma... I would have thought twice about buying this car if I knew I'd be replacing tires ever 25,000K. I now need to purchase a cam kit for $150 and have it installed to fix this issue.....not on warranty mind you. Even the cheapest of cheap tires should last over 40,000K.... I don't care what anyone says.
I've also read the horror stories about the trannies going in these cars under 100,000K so have taken it upon myself to have the tranny flushed at least every two years....because most of the time when this happens, it's also not covered under warranty.
I know I sound like I HATE this car, but it's not that...I really love how it handles, but the workmanship makes me worried about then next 10 years with this car. Until this point I considered myself a proud part of the Mazda family. Before the Mazda3 I had a 1993 Mazda Protg with over 550,000km on it. I affectionately called it the "Super Mazda". It was overheated twice when plowing through snow drifts as high as the hood, it's rear end was clipped by a semi that jackknifed on the highway, it hit a cow (yes...a cow) and did some serious bush trails near the end of it's life. Near the end of life for the protg it was burning oil as fast as it would gas, and the entire top end needed replacement, but it was road hard, and never ever, had the little piddly issues that the Mazda 3 has been encountering in the first 2 years of it with me. I have babied this car from day one and am very disappointed in the performance of the car, and am equally disappointed with the service received and all dealerships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I really hoped to have a Super Mazda II, but know that this car will never stand up to the quality of its predecessor. Unfortunately, I'm just not "feelin it" this time around. They just don't make 'em like they used to. I'm now considering if it's worth dumping this car now to save myself some headach down the road....good luck lm1986
