Whining/Whistling when accelerating??

2003 MAZDASPEED Protege
Ive had my msp for maybe like 3 weeks so far and all is well other than a few things here and there that i start to notice. Anyways, when driving back home (as well as short distances around town) from school today i noticed a whining when i was accelerating, my guess is that it is the turbo or maybe the intake, but i had not heard it before at all, and it is noticeable when driving without music.. the best i can say is that it is a combination between a whistle when sucking in air with small chirping...prob. nothing to worry about but its new and louder than before so i figured id check it out. any info would be great!

Off topic side question, when driving on the highway around 70mph or so im around 3k rpms 75mph or around there its just before 3.5k rpm, i heard that the boost kicks in for the most part around 3.5k, I'm just curious if driving near or on 3.5k rpm will make the boost go in and out or something (not accelerating for the most part, just steady highway driving)..only reason i ask is because im slightly paranoid about damaging my new car and would like to do as much preventative driving as possible. Thanks again.(braindead

Our turbo does make a dog whistle sound when boosting. An aftermarket intake will increase the sucking sound but not the whistle. Is it possible that you just didn't notice or pay attention to the sounds when you first got it? If its excessively loud that could be signs of a developing problem.

Do you have a boost gauge in the car? Just because your turning say 3500 rpms doesn't mean your boosting. Depending on the throttle position you'll be somewhere near 15-10 Hg/in of vaccuum cruising on the highway. But if you mash the pedal down further you'll go into boost. Your right foot pressure controls your boost, no matter the gear or engine speed. Light throttle driving will keep it out of boost for the most part.

Don't be paranoid, enjoy the car!

ya, thats what i figured for the most part, I most likely didn't hear it before because i just wasn't paying attention, ill just keep an eye and hear out for it,(as long as its all normal i am happy with the sounds lol) I should have my money saved up within the month so i can get my first real mods of the hard pipe kits, intake, and SMIC
-and with the highway driving thats good, i didn't feel anything so thats what i thought was going on, i just wasn't sure if it was going on and off slightly or any chance of that happening, at those speeds theres usually some decedent traffic around going that speed or faster so i don't intend on boosting it for the most part..for the boost gauge, thats on my list also, im just planing on getting the parts i just mentioned + the exhaust first then going into the electronic things.- thanks for the info

I call it the banshee. It seems to correspond to when the wastegate starts working. BOOSTR is on the ball, man; enjoy the car. =)

haha, fun... and actually when i have been drivin in around some more, and hearing it, for the most part when the car is cold, or the first 1-3miles driving and it sounds like something is a little loose, but nothing big, (not worrying so much as just curious), but i have to take the car to the dealership b/c i had a stripped screw(and few other things) that i was unable drill out on one of the fog lights when i was trying to change the bulbs (lucky me huh, $160 b/c of a damn screw), but ill just ask what they would do, or if they might know anything about it under warranty.

anyways, thanks for the info guys, the car has been great to drive so far (cool)

Update:

Well I have been hearing the sounds a little louder, and its more of a rattle/winning kind of sound, so tomorrow im going to rush to get my warranty papers in before the 30day renewal after purchase of vehicle lol.
-Had an old neighbor stop by randomly, talked to me and my dad for a while, got into my car that i just bought (turns out he is a "motorhead" as my dad says) so anyways, to the point, turned on the car, reved it a little bit to get the sound going, and his opinion on it, and seemed pretty confident was the turbo (i had done the same check earlier but thought it came from the exhaust mani or maybe turbo) and described it as the shaft or the bolts were loose and ready to go soon, and asked me if i felt the same boost as before, and what do you know, today when driving around i noticed the boost didn't really kick in and i had chalked it up to the heat and the driving time. So once i get that warranty ill head over to the dealer and get them to check it out and most likely to replace the turbo hopefully without too much hassle... so thats my whole deal, just letting you guys know, (nobody)

There's an annoying whistling sound coming from the passenger side when I accelerate softly, moderately, or hard. It's definitely in the engine compartment. It almost sounds like a supercharger, but obviously isn't.

It's driving me nuts.

I assume my PCV is OK because I can remove the oil fill cap effortlessly when the engine is running.

for me it was the wastegate was going bad. (lurk)

ya mine at first was a seal that was leaking in the turbo, had it covered under warranty, have someone rev the car a little while you are listening in the engine bay, at first i thought it might be the exhaust mani leaking but you could hear it from the turbo when you leaned over more, so I would check 2 things,
1 being your boost and vac levels
2 any oil or anything like that in your hotpipes or even intake pipe, i had some around the edges of the coupler when my seals were leaking

and a little while after my turbo was rebuild with new seals the wga went too, but my leak was enough cause vac leaks after about a week of hearing it and having some small boost issues before it really leaked, so check both, those 2 things are most likely the problems, and if you don't find anything, keep an eye/ear on things till you figure it out, before it gets really bad, because chances are it will eventually
