Which tires to choose?

Hi all,

I'm really pissed off about continuous wheel spin in my MS3 every time when I really want to take off hard in a straight line. So I was decide to change width of the tires but I dont know to which 225 or 235?

I'm looking for tires with better dry traction than stock Bridgestone RE50A but not worse on wet than stock ones. I like the fast steering response of stock RE50A with stiff sidewalls and looking for tires that have sidewalls as stiff or even stiffen then RE50A.

Is this possible to find tires that I want?:D

Maybe I shoul buy RE50A in 225/40R18? or You can recommend me better ones?

Sorry for my english (drinks)

I have read good reports on the Kumho Ecsta XS. I have a set in 225-40/18 going on my car next week. They look the part, I hope they perform as well. I wouldn't expect to get more than 10-15K miles out of them though.

Czesc. Polecam opony BFGoodrich KD albo KDW. Opony KDW dadza ci dobra mokra sile pociagowom jak na taki typ opon, jezeli jest to dla ciebie wazne. Jezeli nie, to kup opony KD.

I'm currently using the Kumho XS (in 235/40R18 on RX-8 wheels) and they are definitely grippier than the stock Bridgestones, along with having an even stiffer, reinforced sidewall.

I've only got about 1000-1200 miles on them (and no track days or autocrosses yet) but so far i'm very happy with my purchase. I haven't been in a torrential downpour or anything yet, but they seemed to perform admirably in steady rainy conditions.

I will be going to a 17" rim and a 235/45 tire in the next month or so.

Thanks, so I have first vote for Kumho XS ;)

What about sidewalls in Kumho?

Thanks, I'll take a look at KD & KDW

MazdaSpeed 3 is really unusual car in Poland. Mazda Motor Poland doesnt have MPS in they dealership. All MPS that You can see on the street are imported from Germany, USA or other countries. When I order mine in November 2007 I cant even take a look at any MS3 and dealers dont know who has MS3 to show me. That was only few MS in hole Poland, now that will be i think several dozen, maybe 30. My is from Germany.

I would prefer typical summer tires (ie extreme summer or ultra high summer) because I have winter tires and some snow sometimes ;)

Thanks.

I have a few questions now ;) Which summer tires are more summer LOL - Extreme Performance or Ultra High Performance ?

What do You think guys about road legal semi clicks? ie Bridgestone RE070?
I know that RE070 doesnt develop (appear) in 18 inches but is only an example.
Semi slicks will be very weak on wet conditions too.

What about Bridgestone RE-01R? Is this semi slick or normal tire?

[added]

Does anybody knows Falken Azenis Rt615?

The Bridgestone RE-01R is probably the best Street-Tire class autocross tire out there. They are in the same category as the Dunlop Z1 Star Spec, Kumho XS, Falken RT-615, and Hankook Z212 R-S2

I've used the RT-615s, but IMO there are better tires out there now (Dunlop Z1 Star Spec and Kumho XS to name a couple).

I almost bought the Dunlops, but I not only saved a little bit of money by buying the Kumhos, I also wanted to be one of the first to try out what's being heralded as "the next great ST class tire" by a lot of people in the know. I've never used the Dunlops before so I can't compare directly, but I'd definitely say that these Kumho XSs seem better than both the Hankook R-S2 and the Falken Azenis RT-615, two tires that I have used in the past.

So if I want to choose from this tires the order will be:

1. Bridgestone RE-01R
2. Dunlop Z1 Star Spec or Kumho XS
3. Falken Azenis RT615

?

Falken have the best price only 149$ per tire with shipping in the US plus shipping to Poland about 80$. Not any one of this tires is available in Poland or Europe (scratch) anything i choose i must buy in US and ship to Poland(notcool) so i must make a good choice...

I will keep checking this thread to find out what you picked. I was just searching the forum for the exact question you asked. I can't stand that my stock tires smoke first, second, and part of third before I actually gain traction and begin to pull. I want to put some thing better on the car. I hope the information that I get from you will help me out too.

I dont know which tire choose :( Hankook Z212 R-S2 is only tire that is reachable in Poland. I would prefer to buy in Poland not in US. Can anyone using Hankook Z212 R-S2 and can compare to Dunlop or Kumho or to stock RE50A?

In this test http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=107 hankook is rather hmmmm poor? but is compared to best tires, what about comparing to stock RE50A?

I had a set of those Hankooks on one of my Focuses.

While not as good as the RT-615, Star Spec, or Kumho XS, they are a reasonably priced, reasonably sticky summer tire with excellent performance in the wet (probably actually better in the rain than at least the RT-615) and probably at least as good in the dry grip dept. as (or probably better than) the OEM-issued RE050A.

WTF is this just for a high post count or are we supposed to understand this??? (rlaugh) I'm running a 225/45/18 on stock rims better than stock 215/45 IMO. Definitely going with a wider rim at some point. A lot more options on tire sizing with a wider wheel.

This is Polish language.
BTW I have a question about Nitto Invo tires, does anybody use them or know how they perform on wet\dry surface??(wrc)??

Hello,

I guess the first thing to ask would be for the price range you are looking for?

If you are looking for a solid UHP Summer tire with good wet handling, I would take a look at the Michelin Pilot Exalto 2 tires ($163 ea. on Tire Rack). I test tires for Michelin, and these tires always perform well in the Wet Handling area and compare pretty evenly with the more expensive Michelin tire lines. This tire also has a pretty stiff sidewall and comes in a 225/40ZR18 fitment that will fit the MS3. This tire also blows away the BFG KDW2 in most testing, and you are only paying ~$15 more.

For myself, I use the BFG SuperSport A/S tire since I do some driving in the snow, but if I were to go with a Summer Tire the best performance for the price would be the Michelin PE2.

Link for PE2 Info:

Hope this will help.
