I was thinking of getting a pocket PC

I've narrowed it too Dell Axim X5 or HP 2215?

Any recommendations?

man im somewhat in the same boat. :D

need to upgrade my casio em 500, thinking of 1945, 2215, and x5.

2215 is without a doubt very versatile and super high quality, and its reflected in the cost.

dell axim is very capable and very solid with a great price but size is somewhat an issue.

1945 is small as hell, pricing is ok, but no CF.

damn decisions.

right now i see dell has x5 for like $275 and it's so tempting but i like the form factor of the ipaq for a little bit extra

I have the Dell Axim X5 and very please with it's preformance, it's cheaper than HP but also keep in mind that this is Dell's first self developed Pocket PC in the market. HP 2215 is more expensive but much smaller and thiner, and it's bluetooth integrated so if you are looking for wireless networking option HP should be a better choice for you, but if you consider cost/equipment then Dell should be a better option for you. Like I said I so far has no problem with the Dell unit.

Both Unit comes with SD and CF slots, HP has Buletooth while Dell has standard IR. Both runs on 400-MHz processor but HP 2215 is more expensive but much smaller than Dell.

When I made my decision I basically asked myself, will I benefit from the extra costed unit with wireless networking? na.... and Dell was offering a 15% discount so I went with Dell.

Toshiba!!! I'm impartial because I am the Marketing Product Manager for the Toshiba Line of PPC in Canada.

Wait till the end of this month...we have a crazy pocket PC coming out....can't say much...or I have to kill you... but i will say one thing

4" Screen with VGA resolution.

If you can't wait.....the e750 is at a great price..

But..if you are set between the Dell and the HP....Go HP.

I used to work for HP for about 2 years.....the Dell is not worth the cheaper price. Its big and bulky...and they have had some OS issues as of late.

Agreed.... but...at the same time..as we bring in the new stuff...retailers/Toshiba will be dropping the price of the e750. So there may be reason to wait till the end of this month.

I also see a Pocket PC as more of an investment....versus a $99 Palm Zire.

But...lets face it...toys are never cheap...especially when our Protege sucks much of our funds.

toshiba so far has a bad track record. they have poor customer service (especially for the so many faults in the 740) and they arent offering upgrades.

and besides, they earlier stated the handheld market is dead (most likely because while other manufacturers are doing fine they are reporting loses)

uclap5....no doubt the e740 was not as smooth and as well "taken" care of...no arguement or debate needed. The bottom line is that we have "learned" from that experience and are moving forward.

The e750 has gotten many great reviews and regardless of the fallout from the e740..the e750 is selling well. I can't speak for the US market...but in Canada the Toshiba line of pocket pc share the #2 market share position in the pocket pc os catagory.

moreover....the Handheld market in general is not doing well....no one is making the amount of money as they did 2 years ago. Examples of trying to squeeze the most of the market...IPAQ has 90 Day warranty on some of their handhelds, needed to get to lower price points...Dell produced their handhelds based on which asian manufacturer could produce the CHEAPEST finished product...Gateway decided to not launch their Line....

The biggest problem is that no one really understands the differences between a Palm and a Pocket PC...and the HUGE benefits that the PPC OS can bring. Microsoft and Intel need to step up to the bat and really Market ther OS and the Processors.

The other thing....is that there is nothing "new" in Pocket PCs to really drive the market....everything has been relatively stagnet since the launch of the e740 (the first Dual Slot, WiFi pocket PC in the market) and the e310 (the thinnest Lightest at the time).

Wow...to much on this topic.

ppc market in the us is so so. much better in australia where they have a lead over palm.

Yeah the 740 was really such a great handheld that i seriously considered until all the horror stories popped up. Then recently again i considered a 330 (?) whichever was the second to most recent one until i heard they wouldnt offer OS upgrades (then WM2003 came out) and i dont believe an OS upgrade was offered and now you have to get the 355(?)

so yeah, dont reallly like it when upgrades arent offered. dell has offered upgrades to wm2003 and HP has offered upgrades for models in the past (those that could support it) so both companies points in my book for that.

i think if ive learned one thing with my casio em-500 it is that i need a manufacturer that will continue to support older devices with OS upgrades/ product support if at all possible, and one that software developers fully support. Stupid MIPS processor. my only complaint about the casio.

ive also been looking at convergence devices since that seems to be the way things are going, but nothing really catches my eye but the xda II (which probably wont be released in the US) and the kyocera 7135 (which when released was already behind the times in OS and screen resolution and is way over priced because of that)

all the other entries are so so at everything, and not perfect on everything. I guess ill stick to having my numerous devices that do what i want them to do.

Thats why im leaning towards the 1945 as i need pocket space. cell phone + PPC + camera = bulky pockets. so smaller= better.

if you're not all set on getting a pocket PC (which runs Winblows and crashes at least once a week......co-workers of mine have them and they're always crashing during meetings) then try something with the Palm OS. I've got one of the new Sony Clie devices and it rocks......plus it's much smaller than most of the Pocket PC's (especially the Dell Brick....I mean Axim) and doesn't crash.....at least I've never crashed in the 5+ years I've been using Palm OS devices on a daily basis. The Clie has held up well.....

If I was going to buy a new PDA. i would buy the new Garmin iQue 3600. It is your standard PDA, but also includes a built in GPS, mapping, voice recorder and MP3 player.

That is just my 2 sense...

I know if I decided to upgrade (I have a ipaq 3835) I would have to go with one of the high end HPs. Why? Expansion sleeves - extra devices that basically become part of the unit. no dongles or cables to mess with, extra built in batteries, can read any memory format etc. I also have an old palm III, it was stable, but still crashed (but like the ipaq mostly because of added software), but I don't think I would go back to a palm os just because some of the features and capabilities that aren't there.

I got the HP iPQA 2215 and it works great much smaller than the Dell.

yea. . .. the 3835 ruled. . i still use mine all the time (granted it doesn't help me for prodcutivity. . .but as an mp3 player and playing on wifi on campus) and i used to have a 3150. . man that was the most stably ipaq i ever had. . never crashed and battery lasted a long time. . ..but i got bit with the color bug and upgraded to the 3835. ..i honestly dont' like it as much but i had to live with it since it did cost $$$$$$ when i got it 2.5 years ago

i think i'm going with the HP...i seen two that are offered a 2210 and a 2215...what's the difference?
