When to upgrade clutch??

I think were good to 350hp to the wheels on our clutchs.. No matter wat I'm upgrading to a spec clutch when my stock one needs replacing

for a ms6 the stage 3 cannot hold 320hp/399ft lbs, however the stage 3+ seems to be holding up just fine

For a speed 3 I would not recommend using anything under a stage 2+. I burned up a clutch while tuning a car that had a standback, turboXS turbo back exhaust and an intake. The car was running close to 18lbs of boost.

well just wait for it to fail, thats my opinion. so far i have a laundry list of mods including running 20psi on a PG reworked turbo and my clutch is fine. most of it depends on how you drive. if you slip your clutch a lot trying to get that nice smooth shift all the time, it wont last. i think an MS3 should be able to hold much more power on a clutch than an MS6. AWD is hell on clutches. i am willing to bet i am over the 300WHP mark and so far, so good.

unless you plan on going for huge power... stick with the stock clutch. all of the aftermarkets are going to give you is an undesirable level of clutch chatter... and they're more expensive.

this is not the case at all with most current after market clutches these days. I put a spec stage 3+ into a ms6 and I doubt anyone could really tell the difference in pedal feel or engagement.

Just about the only clutch that will chatter is a 4 or 6 puck with an unsprung hub.

Well I'm not going to argue with you... but I, and virtually every mechanic I know, would beg to differ. I know I regret putting a stage3 into my car. A) I NEVER go to the track or do any racing at all and B) my car is probably only in the 220hp range at best. Total overkill... and, like I said, clutch chatter sucks balls.

What chico said. My other toy, 92 Miata, has a XT ACT clutch in it, the pedal is so hard from the pressure plate the car isn't fun to drive any more. When I can afford it, that clutch is coming out and a OE clutch for a 94 Miata is going in. I doubt I'll ever put an aftermarket clutch in my MS3

that is old school talk for sure. a good clutch doesnt have to feel like a rock. a well designed set up will make the clutch and pressure plate do the work, not your leg. i have driven an STI with a full drag clutch holding 800+hp and it felt like stock.

I don't anticipate needing a new clutch for a long, long time.

I usually get over 100k out of a clutch with ease. I have run 2 clutches out to over 200k without issue. 1 of those was on a turbo car so I don't see issues so far with the stocker. It feels just fine.

All I'm saying is... don't fall into the same trap I did.. thinking that just cuz it's aftermarket and "stage X" it's "better". These high-end aftermarket clutches are only better IF you plan on producing some serious HP. Otherwise, at the very least you're wasting your money (since the OEMs are like half price) and... at the most, your car aint gonna feel right. These aren't windshield wipers people. If you're not happy with the way it feels and want to change your mind... you're easily looking at 6+hours of labor. Don't make the same mistake I did. Even stock clutches can hold decent power so just go with one of those and call it a day. Spend the money you would have spent on getting the aftermarket on something that'll actually do something good.

I have a ACT Xtreme pressure plate in my miata and yes it is stiffer then stock, but the Spec clutches have a stock feel. I have had an owner of a FC RX-7 complain that the stage 3+ was too soft for his liking, he insisted there was something wrong with it when everything was A-OK

Your bringing back memories of my duster w/383 wedge head LOL... To hold the clutch in took all the effort you had, leg twitching, waiting for that green light LOL.....
