When did you do your first oil change?

Hi all- I'm wondering what your dealers recommended for first oil change. Also, if you did one earlier, when did you do your first oil change? Thanks for reading.......
 
My dealer invited me in for a complimentary one at 1,000 miles to get rid of the "break-in oil". I'm also going to be conservative for the first 10,000 miles, so I"ll be doing it again at 4,000.
 
Thanks - but when did your dealer tell you to come in? Did they say 1000 miles.....6000 miles, or when? I'm asking because my dealer doesn't want me in until I hit 6000, and I'm thinking I want it changed certainly at 1000 (now), then maybe 4000-5000 miles.....
 
I read all about break-in oil... you can get metal shavings/dust in the oil from the engine being manufactured, so you SHOULD do your first oil change at 1,000 miles.

My dealer invited me in for 1,000 oil change, and it was complimentary. They confirmed it was to get rid of the break-in oil.

As for after that, the DEALER is recommending every 3,000 miles, and I'm okay with that for the first 10,000. But the book says if you do a lot of city driving or drive it hard to do it every 5,000 miles. If you're not too hard on your car and do a lot of highway driving, do it every 7,500 miles.
 
Just following an old habit, I did mine at 1500mi. Dealer didn't mention a freebie or perhaps I was so happy to drive away, that I didn't hear it said. LOL
 
You have a turbocharger in there.... if you change the oil every 7500 miles, well... thats not very smart.

I got that information out of the CX-7 Manual, so call them "not very smart". Every 5,000 miles for harder/around-town driving - every 7,500 if you're typical mixed city/highway driver.
 
Did my 1st one on thursday at 2600 mile. On the way to the dealer I get my 2nd CEL. They give me a loaner, I pick up my CX-7 the next day and they tell me that it was the GAS CAP......the same thing the changed with my 1st CEL. ????????????????? Something smells fishy. So they said they changed my cap AGAIN .

seems about right.... just because they replaced the gascap doesnt mean that it wont ever trip a CEL for it. Its very possible that you didnt screw the gascap on correctly. I have done that a few times in my speed, and theres nothing wrong with my gascap.

And yes, I recommend/change my oil, around 1k-1.5k miles in a brand new car to remove any particles from the engine that might still be in there from the manufacturing process.
 
I did my first at 3,250. I assume if the 1,000 mile "break-in" oil change was critical, then Mazda would have suggested it.
 
I did my first oil change when I was 8. My dad said it would be "fun", the bastard!

The package from my oil filter wrench says "for ages 10 and up" but I'm going to teach my kid to change the oil on the van when he's 3! It's about time he starts to be useful around the garage!
 
Altho this break in oil may very well be true to some people, I have never, ever, heard of doing an oil change at 1k. I have bought alot of cars in my short period of time, some premium some just regular. If your 1k oil change was comped, that leads me to believe it was a good sales pitch for you to buy the vehicle or that it was just a sales pitch for dealer service to keep you coming back for service there. The legitamcy of a 1k oil change? dunno bout that

IF 1k oil change was really needed, there would have been documenation from Mazda regarding the need for it and/or it would be routine maintenence as part of the schedule I would think.

however, im sure the dealer put a smile on ur face and made u feel good about their service dept by doing so. which, is proably one of the few intentions they had with a 1k free oil change

They didn't tell me about the free 1,000 mile oil change when I was shopping for the car... nor did they tell me about the roadside service either. I didn't know of either until the day I took delivery. So it definitely wasn't a sales pitch. My mother bought a car there too (Mazda 3 Hatch) and had the exact same experience... and free oil change.

Like you, had I heard it from the sales person I wouldn't have believed it. I've been around cars and mechanics my whole life and never heard of "break-in oil"... but then I did happen to read about it prior to me purchasing the CX-7. Considering it was complimentary I didn't see any harm in doing it... and the explanation I read made sense.

And yes, of course it gave me more of the "warm fuzzies" about the dealership itself.
 
If metal shavings were a real issue, the engineers in Japan would have included in the manual to do an oil change after 1 mile.

On that note, there's really no reason, under normal driving conditions, should you have to do oil changes beyond what the manual says.
 
first oil change free is a gimick

I used to sell cars and our dealership used to give free oil changes for life of the car to the original buyer. I asked how could that be profitable. It gets the car in the shop for "sir, your brakes are worn unevenly and we recommend you replace them and turn your rotors" or whatever other items they could push whether the vehicle really needs it or not. (no, they didn't blindly rip people off, but there is a difference between brake pads being worn unevenly and worn to the point the NEED to be replaced for safety reasons)

So 1 free oil change at the dealership (for a 1000 mile break in or just the first regular scheduled one) makes the buyer feel good and if he gets good and prompt service from the sevice department, it is a small investment for the dealership to get you back for other repairs.

Last year I bought a Mazda 6 and was given a free oil change at 3000 miles. It eneded up being a lemon (bad engine/heads) and Mazda worked with me and traded me up to a CX7 for the difference in prices between the invoices (not a bad deal seeing the 6 had over 26000 miles when the trade took place). Both were brand spankin' new and no one ever said anything about a 1000 mile break in oil change. As other posters mentioned, nowhere in the owner's manual does it mention a 1000 mile oil change.

But if you feel it makes a diffence, then do it.
 
rule of thumb on any new engine is to change the oil after the first 50-100 miles to get rid of any metal shavings or anything else that's in the oil from the initial breakin. some auto makers change the oil after bringing the engine up to rpms but beofre it ever sees the frame of the car. some do not. i prefer to play it safe. i have personally built several engines and have owned several new cars and this is my method. i run it for 50-100 miles. change the oil. I use dino oil up till 1000 miles then swap to synthetic. after the 1,ooo mile change i change my oil every 5-6000 miles using either mobile one or royal purple. i have NEVER had an issue with oil consuption, bad seals, bad rings, metal shavings...nothing.
