Wheel Compatibility Question

My wife has a 2003 Protege5 with the 17 inch wheels. This winter I bought here some 16 in steel wheels and snow tires from tire rack. To make a long story short, due to various problems, we are having the car replaced with a 2005 Mazda3. Does anyone know if it is possible to use the winter wheels/tires from the Protege5 on the 3? Tirerack was noncommital in their answer, so I'm at a loss.
