What's up with the 1.8 coil packs?

Well PR5Matt can do it if he cares...he asked...I know nothing about it, but the stock spark is good for well over 200bhp, and a hell of a lot more than the stock compression...

U-LEV cars have to have huge spark power, one reason they make good emission results...Yeah you can have better, but it takes a ton of work before you start to strangle the stock system...

The 1.8L coil pack (It's a single pack, with twin coils attached to one and the other) presumibly allow for more even spark distribution.

The twin coil with leads system seems to, at least in my experience, 'bake' the spark plugs directly under the coils on cylinder 2 and 4. Here's a picture of the ceramic at the base of the plug browned, and a nice, fouled ignition front. This is only after a couple of hundred miles:

The Protege's I've worked on with the FS-DE, have all shown signs of this happening, consistantly.

The WSC Protege's use them, as well. I'll be trying them shortly, so I don't have to change my plugs every month. But we'll see how it turns out.

You put it more elegantly than me, but that was why I was curious. I don't like the coils setting over 2 and 4. Also they don't seem to make as good a contact with the plug as the wires ( I like the "snap"). But, it would be a wast of time if there was really no difference in power, drivability, and spark-plug life. I am glad you mentinioned this "baking" as it might be enough reason to get them.

(bump) Does anyone have a "parts list" for going to 1.8L? I too am not happy with the plugs getting baked (just changed my plugs last week and all were scorched as flat_black commented).

i have these...they don't look like the pic posted above.

i bought them because a VERY reliable source (mazda master tech i know) said that these help smooth out the power band and have a hotter spark. they're about $30-40 + wires.

i believe that tripoint also uses this set-up. these coils are upgrades from a TSB mazda put out for the 1.8L's.

and trust me...the guy who recommended these to me probably knows just as much, if not more about these cars than anyone here. he's a mazda freak too.

i'll see if i can find a link where i posted the part #'s

Yep, I got a set of coils and the bracket from the junkyard. I painted the bracket, and got a new set of coils (The updated ones as mentioned), then got a set of wires from NGK for the '99 Protege 1.8L... Actually, I'm not sure if it was that, or a 2000 626 2.0L... Hrrm.

Either way, I got them all bolted up, relocated the coil connector plugs, then busted my camera just as I was going to take a picture of it. s***. =P

i'll try to take a pic of mine this week...i also have a 2000 626 valve cover...luckily, that was free, they had to replace my p5's under warranty due to the bad finish mazda put on it. that helps to seat the plug wires properly. p5's have the holes for the coil packs to be bolted on...so unless you trim the plug wires (you'll see in my pics), they won't seat on the plug.

*subscribes a few months late*

hmm pics aren't working but I need new plugs after just 10k miles or so on my NGK Iridium IXs so I thought I'd look into doing something to maybe make them last longer next time.

here's the pics of the 1.8L coils on my car. don't knock the gay-ass blue valve-cover...alcohol and spray paint don't mix.

Looks good, it just seems right that all the cylinders get equal treatment :P

question about this, ive got the early 1.8 coil pack that looks like the pic above...(the later 1.8's in Aus have the 2.0 style ones). Does anyone know if these were the ones that were the subject of a TSB? If so, did they replace them with an improved design in the same layout, or did they put the 2.0 style ones on. Ive never been able to find this out for sure. i want to know cos im not sure if mine have been replaced and am wondering if i could still go down to mazda and get it done...heh, a bit late probably.

Thanks topher for your help! Too bad the fucken price jumped!!!

Our ignition systems are already very powerful, I can't fathom any advantage of going with a different style system. We already have way more than we need for spark anyway.

Back from the dead... I've got the Nology wires kit, but I dont like it. I'm gonan go with the 1.8 packs instead.
