what type of oil for the Manual Transmission ('06 canada Mazda5)

I'm getting ready to change the gear oil. I figure I should as the car now has 168,000km on it...it's' finally broken in!! I want to switch out the OEM oil for some Royal Purple but I cant find any references as to the type of oil or how much!!

any help?

It seems the latest crazy in the magical world of elixirs is the Ford Motorcraft transmission fluid. Read below or search the internet.

Based on Mazda3 guys, you need 3 bottles and I decided to get a bottle of fiction modifier too. Check out your local Ford dealer or buy here http://k-mansparts.com/. Mine are in the garage and I do not have time to changed it yet. Be warned, this stuff is super potent. Even when boxed and in two tightly sealer bags, the smell still permeates through and it is a strong smell (luckily a sweet smell and not obnoxious/repulsive smell). Plan to do it right away or have a well circulated space for storage.
In case anyone asks, just b/c the bottle has ‘Ford’ on it does not means it is only for Fords. It may be optimal for Fords but heck Mazda is essentially a Ford, right?

I would recommend against Royal Purple for day to day. I was looking at Motorcraft MT fluid but it was expensive. i went with my tried tested and true Redline MT90. You only need the friction modifier if you have an LSD like in the Speed 3. Motorcraft MT fluid will go into a Speed 3 with no friction modifier required.

Ford owns 3% of Mazda. The ATX tranny fluid for our cars is not the same as that in the Ford 2.3L autos. Mazda still sources major parts like blocks, but I don't assume any internals are shared. It's hard to really know the answer unless you could get in the mind of Mazda engineers.

MT90, and any other Redline oil or tranny fluid for that matter, is really good stuff. The best in my opinion. I actually put Redline 5W-20 in my 5 the first time I changed the oil and the car loved it. It was very quiet and got better MPG than any of the oils I've tried. However, I chickened out due to the fact that Redline is not API-certified and went back to oils with the API starburst logo for warranty purposes. I use Valvoline Syn now and the car seems to like it better than M1 and other popular synthetic oils, including Pennzoil Ultra.

thanks guys. In the end I went with Redline, partially because of initial preference and largely because of availablility!! Trying to find these boutique oils has proven to be a challenge in Toronto. In the end my choice was either Redline or LucasOil. and I've never been a big fan of Lucas.

I'll update in a few hundred KM and let you guys know how it goes!

That's an awfully lot to spend on gear oil! Why the need for boutique anyways if the OE fluid lasted you that long, it's not like you're demanding a whole lot from the mtx anyways?

The boutique oil is not much more than the oem. They were quoting $40 for the fill + labour any way. Redline only cost $11 more and the specs are much better. Now that I am well beyond the warranty it's time to take extra care.

Do you not have Mobil1 available to you? I can purchase 75W-90 for less than $11/qt here. Used to use it in our Blazer differentials, worked great.

Everything from Mobil 1 to Redline tn Pennzoil ended up being in the $15-17 a qt range at least here in Canada. I got Red Line MT90 through Lordco, normally $19 a qt, I got them to give it to me for $15/qt.

Ah, but this is Canada, even mobil engine oil is $12 a quart!!!! Nothing up here is inexpensive... Remember up here, a Mazda5 is nearly 30k out the door (with all the taxes!!)

Ok $27k for my 5 when it was new in 2006

Sux that. Once upon a time when your dollar was less than ours, it made sense. Now, the international market is just hosing you. But its worse Down under. Things seem to be about 40% more expensive down there, at the very least.

Mobil 1 is not in the same galaxy as Redline. Mobil 1 EP is getting close, but don't confuse the "full synthetic" garbage on the M1 bottle with something like Redline.
