What type of Intake to use?

Hi, new mp5 owner here!
I want to start lightly modding my p5, I was thinking intake first.
should I get cold air or short ram?
whats the difference between the two?
I also live in Calgary, which has 7 months of winter, will i need an injection of cold air if I already live in a cold climate?

cold air intake is better. make sure to get a bypass filter too. it works better because the piping goes into/below the bumper/fender area collecting cool air. short ram do not and may harm performance if any. i'd recommend modding your stock intake and buying a k&n drop in filter instead

not in a negative way that i know of. a member that lives in the northern region should be able to answer that for you. but ive never heard anything bad about cai other than possible hydro-locking if driven through a really deep puddle, and by deep i mean deep!

juts dont go trhough the puddle at 5000rpm. and i live in quebec so climat is pretty cold here in winter. havent got any problem with my cheap ass short ram. Colder air generaly means more power since the air is more dense, more compression.

For my own experience I definitely prefer "Injen CAI" best upgrade for P5 you definitely feel the difference...I tried SRI just a waste of money...I lived in chicago always cold never had problem with it...I just don't drive my car where its flooded....don't recommend bypass filter coz is like you running a short ram....

how is running a bypass like running a short ram

Honestly, it doesnt matter. Ive oned CAI and SRI they both make almost no power. Each one has a different sound and thats about it. If you want power Id recommend a ram air, it will give you better throttle response and a noticeable pull. Its not much but you can tell....

It does matter. Colder air is denser. Not all intakes are made equal. The more air you can squeeze into the engine the more potential you have for burning more fuel. I'm sure it will show on a dyno. But the power gains are so minimal you won't feel it other wise.

It really makes no difference. I use a Sri and I monitor my intake temps with my car pc/obd2 and at any speed they are at ambient or just slightly above. If I sit in traffic yes the temps will go maybe 15 degrees higher, but it's not like I want full power then anyways. Just get what's cheapest with a good filter. An intake is only really for sound. They may add 3 hp, but you won't notice a difference in real life. If you want power get the mp3 ecu and a header! If it is 25 degrees out, I'm seeing 25-27 on my computer for temps. When you move a steady gust of wind is blowing through your engine bay as fast as you are moving. What most people dont take into account is how hot the piping gets near the engine, or even the intake manifold! The intake manifold gets hot to the touch! That's going to be a bigger factor then anything
