what turbo to upgrade to

whats the biggest turbo the msp could use without going too big. sry i dont understand the flow charts yet. i know azian6er has a gt30xx, any other takers? im goin with a disco potato sometime down the road myself.

depends on if you're looking for high horsepower for the track, or more torque for the streets. a bigger turbo is going to take longer to spool, so you're only going to benefit from it at higher rpm ranges, which is best for the track. a smaller turbo is better for the street. a gt28rs would probably be the best one for both, where it slightly lags more than a stock gt25 but still yields high horse power

yea thats right on. i do alot of autoxing so anything much bigger than a gt28rs wouldnt spool up quick enough for me. i was just wondering whats the biggest anyones gone.

he had a different manifold tho.

i'm not completely sure, but i think if you wanna use the stock location of the mani/downpipe/hotpipe, i believe the biggest turbo you use is the GT2871.

Ive been told that you can runa gt 3071r no the stock exaust mani. because the flange size is the same as a stock one

I would go with the gt28rs with the 64a.r housing if the car is going to be driven primarily on the street. Like kicker posted earlier, anything below 10psi or so with the 28rs is decent on the stock block but with more boost i would build the block or at least have a spare...lol

You guys make me want to scrap my hi boost set up and do a MSP set up. With the stock turbo upgrade that you guys are speaking of whats the max boost it will hold. Has anyone done a flow test? If so i would love to see the curve graph.

it will never fit...not enough clearance

Not true.

The largest possible turbo that fits in the stock location is the gt2876r (gt25/40r). This is a hybrid turbo, which uses a gt28r turbine housing, with a gt40r compressor housing. Running this turbo, you will have NO room for the wastegate, so you would have to weld the flapper shut and and have an external wastegate flange welded into the stock mani. With this turbo, you would also have to have custom intercooler piping made, since it uses a 2.5 outlet and 4 inch inlet. The stock s-pipe will bolt right up.

The gt28rs is the biggest "drop in" turbo. It requires little to no work to make it work with your current setup. Some people modify the wastegate actuator, while others use the stock one from the MSP.

I am *guessing* that a gt30xx would be a tight fit, but may actually work. I think it has a slightly larger turbine housing, so the stock S-pipe may or may not work. Since the gt40r compressor housing clears the block, I would think the g30 compressor housing would as well. But, I dont know if it would allow for enough clearance to run a wastegate.

My advice: Get a gt28rs, get a 3" exhaust, and get her tuned (with some kind of EMS). If you can a j-spec exhaust cam, that would be beneficial as well. It would allow you to move more exhaust gasses faster, which (if tuned properly) will allow for even quicker spool up :)

Well, in My Opinion TBK Performance and I are going with the GT35 Turbo with small housing, to make some sick numbers, we are putting this turbo to hit full boost around 3k rpm all the way to 7.5k. in my case i want to have a setup that will be quick acceleraring in low speed , and a true monster in high rpm and high speed. I'am really happy with what i have right now, but i just hate when the turbo runs out of air after 4th gear and up, i need something that can keep the power all the way in all gears, Honestly the best way to have an awesome Race it's were you have space . like in the highway. real potential vehicles race in long straightaways, not from one light to another.

you have a built head right? 7.5k sounds awefully high for any protege. good luck w/the gt35, i think youll be the first w/one of those.

yeah, I have fully build head Port and Polish, Bigger Valves, Harder Valve springs, FS-ZE Intake Cam, SR Adjustable Cam Gears, 626 Intake Manifold Port and Polish, also 60mm port and polish Throtle body, 760cc injectors. etc. also i lower even more the compression by adding a thicker Cometic head gasket to 8.1:1, with these i can boost alot. I want to have something completely different from everyone. hopefully in 3 weeks i have everything installed and tuned, ill make some videos about it. if you think about it the GT35 with small housing aint all that bad. EVOs, STis, SRT-4s are using this turbos to be real street and track killers, you just need the proper parts, and the proper tuning for this. i want to have something that when i hit the gas pedal that s*** never stops pulling and making more power, iam tired of runing out of power, air in high rpms, and after 3rd gear that s*** starts decreasing little by little, good races are in high way or long straighaways, you dont race from a red light to another. im going with the Hiboost Turbo Manifold, Tial External Wastegate, 3hiboost downpipe, 3Downpipe back Exhaust with HKS Hi power Muffler, Spearco bigger front mount intercooler, 3intercooler piping, HKS SSQV Blow off, Hiboost Turbo Intake, and TBK Performance 3rd and 4th Transmission 600whp+ Gears already developed and tested by TBK.alsoiam doing cryo if im spelling it right to 1st, 2nd,5th gears I think these is the last stuff i can do to this car, I think ive done everything posible to it. after these no more mods to the car. this is my end.

s*** thats a lot of $$ to throw around man, but bigger HP better on the street(drive2)
I haven't seen a T60 Turbonetic hybrid but this mech from a mazda dealer around my area has this one on his car. I know is huge but haven't actually seen it.I'll bet that might be one or two turbos that you can fit in MSP.
This guy has like 11 injectors and nas and s*** loaded to it.
I don't know why would you go that far, including some members, this is not a track car imo , you can put some good # but MSP is not worth $$ for all that work man.
But i'll stick with GT28RS when i get some $$ to throw around (glare)

P.S Mazdaspeed2oo35 i know you have/had GT28RS right? You complaining that its not as good as it sounds ?? cuts off/slows down after 4th gear and up ??
Never heard that before but if you can explain ??

BTW you got a sick ride, TBK must love this MSP

Edit: I was talking to kooldino to get some 8.1:1 pistons for myself, i thought i was the first to go for it but you read my mind, I'd like to know how it will turn out on them 8.1:1 pistons , can't wait to see some results

if you ever need anything let me know, i'am a sales Rep for TBK Performance and i can get you anything you want, in a good ass price. Anything, Transmission Gear sets, Turbo Kits, Intercoolers, Anything.. Just Hit me up with a PM. We Have lots of new stuff for the Proteges, MSP's, MP3, P5's etc, and basically anyother Car Brand and models..

What is this TBK transmission stuff? Replaced 3,4,5 gears? Price? Gear ratio's?

As far as the turbo stuff goes. I remember talking with beau about turbo applications he reccommended for my setup and at the time i was going towards a GT28RS, but he said that the 2871R was the ideal setup because it offered about 50-70 addtional HP capacity, and still fit in the stock location (same outer shell as a GT28RS).

I still think i'm going with a disco potato, i mean, i can't use 250hp/tq as it is now, 450hp would just be stupid in this platform.

Another sidenote, i vote you stick with the stocker. Until your built with all supporting mods and EMS you've got no place for an upgraded turbo. And by the time you decide to do it don't forget your entire tranny will need to be re-worked to support it. I haven't maxed out the stock turbo on my car yet and it still makes methonal injected Stg 2 srt 4's look slow.

about 450 hp in a MSP it's no ridiculous to have, trust me TBK had a protege with 382whp and it was a freaking beast, it was doing 11"s in quater mile, laughing at Corvettes, and cobras with nos. obviously you need to have a setup for the street in these case low boost for daily driving, and high boost when you race either in the track or in the street so now they are building a bigger better and stronger Protege.

I changed my mind about my turbo kit, i'm putting the Biggest GT25 Series which is GT2560R - 707160-10, to have a more aggresive spooling in low speeds and hi power at high rpm.. I have done everything already to my engine, i just need to move to the last step bigger turbo and exhaust..

tbk have a website? I have never heard of them. does hiboost make a manifold for the garrett gt30r? I emailed them and they never responded. I am not really looking to have a bunch of stuff made just to bolt up a bigger turbo.

That turbo would be a waste of money for you. That will offer very little performance over your current turbo (gt2554r). If you want the instant spool, why not get a GT28rs with a .64 AR turbine housing?

The biggest problem you are going to face, is exhaust backpressure. Even though you will be upgrading to 3" turbo-back exhaust, a .64AR housing is going to limit your peak HP. There is very little chance that you will hit the HP numbers you want with a .64AR housing turbine housing.

You should really get the gt28rs with the .86 AR housing. Spool up will be slower, but if tuned right, hardly noticable. Whoever said the gt28rs doesnt pull till redline is crazy. That turbo is beastly on our cars. Try it, you WONT be dissapointed.

People are getting me wrong, i was talking about my GT25 turbo . the stock turbo that the msp came with, im killing this little baby to the max. it spools and pulls hard ass ****, but to a certain point, after 4th gear it runs out of air. the max psi i can get this baby to hold its 18.5 psi on 106 octane gas. regular gas 16 psi , with a permanent spike of 26 psi for a hold 2nd gear, and half of 3rd. after that it only blows 16 continuosly 16 psi. i really need a power at high speed and rpm. probably depending of the price ill go with the biggest GT25 series turbo which produces 480 HP or the GT2871R, depends of the price differences..
