What sub/s with JL 500/1?

I've never been in a car with a 15" woofer. Is there any more delay due to the size of the driver, any noticeable loss of clarity? Would it still be able to handle dance type music?

with that JL amp pushing it, i wouldn't worry about the typical "slowness" of larger drivers. the JL amps have over 500 dampening factor, if i'm not mistaken. the higher the dampening, the more control the amp has over a sub. typically over 200 is recomended, and 100 is the bare minimum. the JL amp will make the 15 dance like a crackhead having a seizure:D if you listen to dance music with a lot of bass, especially low bass, the 15 would be sweet. figure most clubs use 18's in large ported boxes;) course like i said, if size is that big of a concern, get a 12. with anything you get you'll need to upgrade your front speakers. a good set of components running off a 75 x 2 amp will be a nice addition;)

go with a kicker solobaric 12 l7

dear god WHY?! cause it says kicker on it? cause it's square? cause they do good in SPL contests, since they have more surface area? none of those mean anything for daily use. and for daily use, a sub with a higher linear excursion will be better, so it's more capable of reproducing the low freq's. kicker designs their subs to be efficient in the 50-80 hz range. the response is far from linear in a ported box, and it is extremely boomy, which is bad for SQ.

Thats been 100% true of all the kicker ported boxes I built. They are certainly loud but sound like ass.

Definitely have to agree. My boyfriend has a pair of 12" Kickers in his car .. and while they're a few shades louder than my pair of 12" JL subs, the quality isn't NEARLY the same. His are a lot .. what's a word? .. a lot LOOSER, if that makes sense. But I guess, perhaps, it all depends on personal taste.

I guess I should look into how much space that 15 would take up. I could build a box for it, but probably not till March when I go back to school and have access to our wood shop. Same goes for the e12A. With the 12, at least I know I have enough room for it. The vented enclosure on their site looks simple enough to build.

I'm inclined to think that a 4 CF box would take up too much space, but I'd have to look at actual dimensions. Would the 15 in a sealed box still edge out the 12 in a tuned vented enclosure?

As far as the 12w6v2, I think I'd rather get another 10w3 and keep my current set-up. It would cost less than half what it would cost for the w6 and enclosure. I suppose it's even still an option to do this, although it will be hard to find a 10w3 in new condition, as I certainly don't want another used one.

the SE 15 in a 3 cu ft sealed box would be louder than the A12 from 36 hz and up. from 36 to 20 hz the 12 in a 1.75 cu ft ported box tuned to 27 hz would be louder. i don't have a calculator handy, and i can't use the one on my laptop, since the insert key is messed up, but a 4 cu ft box really isn't that big. the widest i'd go for the trunk would be 32". don't go over 16 tall if you go that wide, either. you could run two 3" round ports that are 15 3/4" long, or one slot port 15"x1"x16" long. both will keep the port velocity under 115 MPH, and the most i'd go with is 130 mph.

been pretty happy with mine i may not be as knowledgable as ya'll are but i listen to alot of rock and the kicker solo has been really good, i had two jl 12w3's and i think the solo has been pretty good, and to the reference about it being just because it is "kicker" and i bought it for the cool factor, little much, i think it sounds good and i got a great deal on the kx400.1 and the kicker solo

ok for a 4 cf box (6912 ci):

(I didn't add for driver or ports)

if you meant 32" x 16" exterior dimension (30.5" x 14.5" interior) the interior depth would be 15.63"
total box dimensions: 32" wide x 16" tall x 17.13" deep

I found on their site that the displacement is .17 (I assume CF)

so, for a 4.17 cf box (7205.76 ci)

interior dimensions: 30.5" x 14.5" x 16.29"
total box dimensions: 32" x 16" x 17.79"

i think the biggest box i put in my trunk was like 30x30x16:D and yeah, i meant exterior. if you don't mind it being a little deeper in the trunk, it'll make getting it in and out easier to have it a little narrower, like 30" ext;) add in another .25 cu ft for the port:D so with a 30" wide ext, you'll end up with 28.5" int width and make the height 16.5" ext/15" int. the box will have to be almost 18" deep. that's a little over half the depth of your trunk;)

minus a couple inches for the amp (back of seat)

* opening trunklid *
(uhm) damn, I could have sworn this car had a trunk :D

damn! how'd you get that s*** in there?

with the help of a good friend, and a lot of kicking and cussing:D do yourself a favor and take off the trunk catch BEFORE trying to put a large box in. it's got two bolts holding it to the inside of the trunk. a minute of your time will save it from getting screwed up, and possibly in your way. also, cover the rubber trunk seal, in case the box puts pressure on it. mine is pretty well ****** from all the installing and removing boxes:( put a thick garbage bag in the bottom of your trunk, so when you put the front end in and set it on the floor, it'll slide forward really easy:D if the box is heavy, get help. i've tried to lift too heavy of a box into my trunk and took a chuck out of the paint on my bumper:( other than that, good luck:D here's a how-to for sub box building i wrote up a while back:
http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=810
on the SPL enclosure i built today i tried some elmer's probond polyurethane glue, and it looks very promising. a bit more than regular wood glue, but i can't even get this s*** off my hands and arms, so it better be sticking to the wood:p i picked it up at home depot, but i'm sure it's available at more places. now i use a router with the jasper circle jig for cutting circles, and it's so easy, and the hole is so much cleaner;) it's a bit expensive to do it that way, though, as i spent $100 on the router and $50 on the jigs;)

wow, great! bookmarked :D

that's a pretty complex box

yep, took about 25 hours for designing it and building it:eek: i built a small .65 cu ft ported box for two 8's, and it only took me 2 hours to design and build it:D that one i did the how to on is a 6th order bandpass designed for both SQ and SPL. switch the port cover and it changes how each chamber is tuned. that was a b**** and a half to design, though:( if you've got any questions on box building, feel free to ask. i get bored and build new boxes all the time:p yesterday i built an SPL enclosure i'm hoping to hit 150 dB with three 8's:D day before was a ported box with four 8's in it, and i'm going to meter it today to see what it'll do;)

hmm I wonder if this is a project I should attempt this weekend? I could probably find the necessary tools around my parents house (hmm)

i built a box monday, another one tuesday, wednesday i worked on putting 8's in my front doors, and today i took it easy:D tomorrow will be either working on putting the 8's in my front doors, or testing and tuning my SPL box;) saturday will probably be testing for the SPL comp i'll probably be at on sunday:p

my current box is 30" wide by 13" high by 12" deep

damn I keep waffling

right now I'm kind of leaning towards that e12A (scratch)
