What Job to Have?

So, I'm in college right now pursuing a degree in Computer Science but I'm curious as to what jobs people have out there that are making some good money. I'm talking about at least $75G a year and more. I would love to find someone on here that could give me some direction as to what to spend my free time studying so when I graduate I'm up to speed. I also want to find a job that pays good money and has advancement potential. Send your ideas and let me know..... I want to make good money when I graduate and I'm willing to relocate anywhere in the world to do it.

Ohh... right now I work as a GIS Tech at the Water District in Las Vegas.

You are really going to have to get lucky and walk into something great or be unbelievably gifted to graduate college and make $75000 a year. It's going to be that much tougher since you are in a computer related field. You really are going to need something to set yourself apart from the rest, like a ton of certifications, lots of experience, etc. Good luck, but I wouldn't count on it if I were you.

There's no WAY you're going to find a job in computers that pays you 75k fresh out of college with a BS degree. The only chance you'd have at that is if you're highly skilled in a big proprietary software package like SAP or PeopleSoft...and good luck learning that outside of real-world business environment. Your only other option for serious dough is to go into business yourself.

Yeah, good luck finding that kind of dough right out of school. I'm 3 years out and making a hair under 60 right now.

I received my BS in computer science in August 2003. Since May 2003, I have been sending out at least 5 resumes a week.

I finally got a position on March 1, 2004. Pay is $35K a year. I consider myself lucky for that. A BS degree means absolutely NOTHING in this field. To make 75K, you need multiple years of experience. No certification, no matter how glamorous, will get you $75K with no experience. Well, maybe a CCIE might ;)

So you do what I did. Get a job, get your foot in the door somewhere. Live with the 'low salary' for 2-3 years. THEN, you *might* be able to find a job that pays close to your desired salary.

Remember, even $30K is probably a hell of a lot more than what your income is right now as a college student.

EXPERIENCE is the key word!

Made 35K out of college with a 2 yr Computer Science Degree. Now...3 yrs later I am about where you would like to start. I don't think it is possibe now a days to start at 75K.

If you do though...let me know, and I'll go to that company and ask for 150K.

Try and find some consulting/contract jobs if you can. You will get paid more, and it gives you a chance to try some different things and get experience in different areas quickly.

Also, take a look on Monster.com or other job site, and look for listings for jobs where people are making big money. That will show you the skill sets people are looking for, even if you don't have the experience right away.

Good Luck bro!!!
I have a BS in electrical engineering and a AS AutoCAD. I work for a major grocery store chain located in Missouri. I've been out of school for about 4 years, so I have some experience in my field. I'm the lead store planner and CAD manager. I do very well for only being 26 years old. I'm in the high 60's, plus I get a company car.

Consulting is a good idea also, you do get a lot of expierence and you get a better salary. Benefits are usually pretty bad, but straight out of college you shouldn't need good benefits anyway.

Also remember that what you make it all relative to where you live. If you make $75k in San Franciso, you are basically poverty level (OK, not really). If you make $75k in Podunk, Tennessee you are rich. So don't get too hung up on how much you make - look at the cost of living.

Very good point!

Just go to Salary.com and put in the position you would like and the locations you are thinking of working. You'll see your salary can range from 30-120K depending on where you want to work.

John, I have 12 years as a technical supervisor and I sometimes break 80k depending on bonus. My guys make $22 to $25 an hour. So thats the range in vegas. Are you close to that at the water district? I could make more but I only work M-TH about 35 hours a week.(sssh) You know I need time with my cars.(naughty) Louie

I don't know why people are so hung up on the fact there there are supposedly "no" jobs in the computer field. Outsourcing is a problem, yes, but there are some jobs that can't be outsourced, like consulting, on site administration and stuff like that, and if you do a search on monster.com there are lots of jobs like that. Unfortunately though, IT especially is one of those fields that the jobs available are NOT advertised. Many times its who you know, much more than what you know, initially to get you the job. However, your CS jobs like programming and stuff are getting pretty slim, so def. go to the job fairs and stuff like that on campus and make connections with the employers. Networking is the key really in IT.
