what is the purpose of parking lights?

I turn on my parking lights when it gets dark enough that I want people to be able to see ME better, but when I don't need headlights to see.

See my previous post:rolleyes:

the practice is still continued and required in some european countries/cities today

They were used in the early 1900's at night for parked cars. They were gas lanterns on the side of the car so people would not drive into them since streets had no lighting back then. Why they continued to have them today is beyond me.

wait wait wait.....people park there car, and leave the "parking" lights on, and walk away? Well I guess it makes sense, I mean a runaway horse and buggy could not see your car and slam right into it.

so we have parking lights to warn other dirvers that we are there in case our headlights go out......but should we continue to be driving if we can't see where we're going? i mean, i could probably get home with the fog lights, but parking lights aren't goning to help much?

well i'm guessing they put that in for protege's and they probably didnt feel like designing a whole new system just for cars with fog lights.

I guess it's better some lights than no lights at all.

and like someone said if you loose one light people will still be able to tell that it's a car and not a motor cycle.

I always heard that it was required to have the parking lights on between dusk and dawn if you have the engine running and are not moving...

Why do cops always park with their parking lights on???

It's just another weird law. They have to have the car running to use the radar gun and they have to have the parking lights on when they're stopped with the eninge running. No technical reason the car has to be running when the gun is used. Just another stupid law. At least in Bama and Georgia it is. Dont know about everywhere else.
