What is the dumbest thing a Parts store employee has ever said to you?

I am carrying this over from a local thread in Alabama. Keep in mind that i have worked parttime and full time for Advance Auto parts for 6 years as a manager in some capacity. Here are some of my stories. I know that you guys have some as well, especially dealing with the MSP. Here we go.

My favorite story was when I fxcked up the Autozone boys when they would call the store seeing if we have something. One conversation went like this:

-phone rings
me- thanks for calling AAP, how can I help you
AZ- hey its XXXXX from autozone, I need to see if you have a part
me- ok what is it and what is it for
AZ- water pump for 95 blazer v6
me- ok hold on let me check
*I have talked to this employee many times and I know he is a brick. In the background I can here him talking to the customer.......here is where the fun begins*
me- hmmmm, lets see, I have a few here, do you want a price or just seeing if I have one.......looks like there are different options here
AZ- what options
me- so a v6........ok .......does it have low beam headlights
AZ- * he then asks the customer if it has low beams, there is a pause and the customers says "uhhh, yeah I think so"
me- * at this point I am crying*........ok then, yeah I have it.....just send him on down and I will have it waiting
AZ- thanks man I appreciate it

Not saying that AAP doesn't have some dumb ass rocks because I know that we do as well. But damn that was funny.

I have some good stories from the other side of the counter, in fact I have a ton especially when I worked in Dahlonega GA (the site of the First American gold rush, nascar, and white lightning). I had one guy argue with me for 1 hour about how the radiator he bought was defective. Later I find out that his 85 chevy longbed has a 350 with .120 overbore and he wonders why it cant go up hill without over heating. Another guy told me he bought an 87 jeep cherokee and it needs motor mounts, but he swears that it is fast as hell, so fast in fact that it "spun the odometer all the way around"...........I can't make this stuff up.

On another occasion a local truck guy comes in after looking at my sr20 240sx with a fmic/gt28r/suspension/exhaust in the parking lot. He walks in and goes " hey brandon.......how much turba you got on that RX ? ". Really......how much turbo......I was so dumbfounded that I didn't even know how to answer the question. I was already in a fowl mood and I was not about to explain how a turbocharger works to a guy who has never seen one and thinks that its a shot of NOS.

I could go on for days

"they don't make that gasket metal"

While I was holding the gasket for the thermostat in my hand which is metal.

from the days when i was in the shop...

cust. had come in with a flat tire, i take a quick look and see that his allignment was massively off which had cause the inside of the tire to wear right through the belts. told the guy that the huge gash was the cause of his flat. he looks at me and asks me if i can just patch it up and put air in it, he'll be back next week.

now for those who understand this situation, a 4 inch gash repaired by a quarter inch patch might not work too well would it? i think not

I can't even begin to recount all the bs i've heard from the idiots that work the stores around here, they can never find the right part nor do they know how to do anything to a car besides changing the wiper blades and battery.

I had to go to two stores before someone knew what a thermostat seal was, both stores tried to sell me a water pump gasket that I obviously didn't need.

Me- I need a set of spark plugs for an '85 RX-7
Parts guy- Is that a four cylinder?
Me- No, it's a Rotary
Parts guy- So, it's a four cylinder?
Me- NO, it's a rotary.
Parts guy- you want a brake rotor?
me- NO, I want spark plugs!
Parts guy- Right, for a four cylinder?
me- *sigh* Yeah, four cylinder....

I worked at Autozone for about a year. Wow there are alot of dumb customers and dumb employees. I lost many brain cells working around thoughs people.

keep in mind, our cars use a slave system, two coilpacks and two plug wires to go with them...

AZ: How can I help you
me: I need a set of coil packs and the plug wires too
AZ: ok, give me a sec....what kind of vehicle
me: 03 Mazdaspeed protege
AZ: turbo?
me: yes
AZ: you need four coil packs, not the wires
me: no, the car uses two coil packs and two slave wires
AZ: Im looking at it on the screen here( turns the screen towards me and shows me where it says "four required"
me: ( I proceeded to pull out my phone and prove him wrong with a pic of our setup)
AZ: Im surprised your car still runs like that, you could mess something up using only two coil packs
me: ( Im getting frustrated at this point and gave up)...just get the "two coil packs and wires please
AZ: ok,no problem, you will be back for the other two coil packs later today
me: ( I walk out without saying anything)

The retarded thing is that guy drove a protege to work

lol!!! thats funny!!!!

LOL, yeah you are right. Either way it wasn't a DOHC 3.0. The guy wondered why the belt was 6 inch too long. All I remember is seeing that it looked like the 3.0 chrysler van motor, which was a push rod motor. Either way the guy counted the valve covers, which oddly enough equaled 2, so he thought it was dual overhead cam.

Come on give me a break. This was like 8 years ago, I guess I am the only one with any stories anyways

EDIT: Post was corrected for the sharp shooters

Dumbest thing I've had a Parts Employee tell me is "That's not a piston engine, it's a rotary, see 1, 2, 3, 4 plugs, right in a row, it has two per rotor, I can't scan a rotary"

That would be all well and good if we hadn't been staring at the FS-02 in my MX-6.

Second dumbest:

I walked into AAP lookin for Spark Plugs and water remover for the fuel.

Him: "Coil packs are bad in that little 4.6 you got there, that's why it's missing so badly"
Me: My car doesn't have coil packs, it has a coil per cylinder, It's missing though because the plugs are fouled and there is water in the fuel
Him: Don't argue that with me, it's the same difference, they have two coil packs, with wires to each cylinder
Me: No, actually the 1999+ Mustangs use a coil on plug system, each plug has a coil directly on it.
Him: I already told you not to argue with me, boy, I've been selling these things since 1991 (mind you the Mustang didn't get the 4.6 until 1996)
Me: Well, I OWN one, and I need to talk to YOUR manager. Now please go get him for me.

At this point I just stared at the guy until he walked to the back of the store, another employee actually told the manager what was up.

I worked at AAP for 2 years, and currently my brother has been with them for 1. There is no reason for stupid asses like that guy.

LOL.....2 cams total = DOHC. True enough on a 4-cylinder engine.

Highspeed....do you have any info on the OHV 3.0? I thought the multitude of V6 engines that Chrysler used in the vans were all SOHC and DOHC. I had the 3.0 SOHC 141 hp in my 93 Sundance, which I know to be the same Mitsubishi engine used in the 93 Caravan / Voyager. (Fantastic engine, btw...still stands as the most trouble-free car I've ever owned).

I don't have any info where I am now because I am deployed in Afghanistan. Its older than 91, maybe late 80's I believe. My parents had one and I think it was in the old Caravans. I will see what I can look up.

Funny stories in here. I dont have any particularly good stories but I have went in there to get parts for the msp and have them look up a normal protege for the part number and they are like ahhh that wont work. And I just make them give me the parts. I always use Orileys now because they have really good parts/service/computer system.
