What have I broken?

I was pulling out of a parking lot the other night and something broke. I was slowly excellerating from a stop when my clutch seemed to lose engagement. I was able to continue around the bend, stop at a light and then accellerate slowly to about 20mph when it ceased to engage at all.
My clutch had never slipped before this incident.
When I first pullled out of the parking lot I heard a noise that I had atributed to gravel being kicked up into the wheel well, however upon reconsidering the event I don't think that I accelerated hard enough to do that. Other than that noise I do not recall any other noise.
While I was moving and trying to figure out what was going on I went through the gears and I was getting power from none of them. I may have lightly tried to engage one of the gears without using the clutch because at one point I remember lightly grinding the gears before I stopped the experiment I was performing.
Today I stearched the forum and found that peoples LSD's are breaking and wonder if this might be the real culprit. The car has only 45000km on it and no real mods.
Can anyone tell me with certainty what this is?

I've gone through a few clutches in my life ... and they have never just "gone out" and lost engagement all at once. You usually get a hint of things to come with some slippage. May be the LSD :(

Anyone else?
I don' tknow much , but I think that the indicator that it may be the LSD as opposed to the clutch is that when I tried to change gears without engaging the clutch I wound up grinding the gears. Sound theory?

Sounds like your LSD to me......Sounds dead on to what happened to mine a few weeks ago....Clutchs dont usually just go out....For it to be your clutch in this case, the Disk would had to have broken or at least the sprung center would heve had to seperate...My opinion says it is your LSD.

What your milage?
I hope your under warranty.

Should still be under warranty. 45000km. I'm well in that timeframe that peoples LSD's go. I would just really expect to have heard some clunking or soming...that only seems to come from the trunk though:)

no noise: makes me think Clutch
grinding gears when not engaging clutch: makes me think LSD.

I don;t want to pick the wrong one and have to pay for it. Is there anyway to tell which it really is?

Take it in for warranty....let them figure it out...Your LSD WON'T make ANY noise before going out...It just goes...And it usually seems to go under NORMAL driving rather than spirited..Its weird. I would say that your LSD took a crap...and either way..Mazda will tell you...but BEWARE....My dealer tried to tell me it was my clutch....Then After I made them look into it further...They realized it was what I told them it was from the get go...The LSD....
Your LSD took a s***...quit playing with it and call for a tow to your Service dept....hell Mazda even pays fopr that and your rental...Take advantage of it.

Thanks Man, thats what I was looking to hear! I just needed to hear that it wasnt my clutch because they are saying taht they wont cover that...turned in to a small incident which got me a *free oil change...had it been the clutch though I would have taken it elsewhere for repair and fronted the cost there; I am happy to hear that it is the LSD, Mazda will have to fix that.

Nothing is 100% till they diagnose it but I would take the chance on it being the LSD...Just let them get paid for the warranty work. If your car is stock, the Stock clutch is more than adequate and Is cheaper that most of the aftermarkets out there that are worth a crap...Even if its your clutch ,I would be fighting over it at this milage..Thats really low milage for any clutch problems other than a wore out disc from driver error.

LSD.
Grinding.
Bad sign.

lol, funny guy; well they havent fixed it yet, but considering that it is in 2 pieces I'm guessing it isn't the clutch. I'll keep you posted though.
