What has everyone done to protect their CAI from water

After installing my Injen CAI, which by the way fit really well. I was looking around the bumper and under to see where the air is being sucked in other then where the tube goes into. There is a good sizeable opening directly under the left front bumper behind the fog light, where it is getting it's source of air. I know come spring time, when it pours, it is going to be almost impossible to prevent water from getting in, amongst many other unwanted foreign particles. Just curious as to what you all have done inorder to prevent this from happening? Thanks take care all and be well. ;)

It's no big deal if the filter gets wet. The key is to never submerge it (when the car is running), it will only suck water if it is submerged. In that instance, you need a AEM bypass valve that will save your engine from the ol' slurp-bang! The filters are cheap btw, replace em every ??? year/two? When the filter looks dirty? No idea really, but they are only $15-20 depending on brand. Hope this helps.

Yeah...get the AEM bypass. Its a little investment, and definately a good precauction. If you were to sumberge your CAI in a bucket of water, it would be fine. But if you got just a little water without that bypass, goodbye DOHC 2.0!

I don't think you guys need to be so freaked out by water and CAI's. Tbese bypass valves just came out a little over a year ago. What the heck do you think people were doing before that? I for one have never read (and I've been frequenting ClubSi's message boards for 2+ years) about anyone getting hydrolock from just driving around in downpours. However, I *have* read about hydrolock from people driving through a couple of feet of water. But if you're stupid enough to attempt to drive through a couple of feet of water, you deserve it! Do unto your MP3 as your MP3 would do to you!!!

Hi, I just wanted to say that I agree about trying to avoid water that are few feet high and potentially engine damaging. Although you never know if it is just better to be safe than sorry. A buddy of mine drives a Si (he's a clubsi.com fanatic) that's probably lowered 1.5" with an AEM cold air intake. He got caught going back home from work in a severe thunderstorm. This guy is usually extremely careful with his car, but somehow this time his misjudgement caused his intake to suck in gobbles of water into his engine. Car stalled and had to park it on side of the road before giving his girlfriend and then me a call for help (to push it onto a church parking lot). Lucky he was able to flush the oil out, let the engine dry and nothing major seems to be wrong with his car.

LinuxLagerMP3,
Hey where does your name come from? Mine comes from 2 of my favorite pastimes:

Linux OS
Martial Arts

Doomer is right, there's no need for it unless you are going to a rally or something. If someone is stupid enough to drive through deep water like that they deserve what they get. But hitrix is wrong about the price,... try $30 to $40 for the bypass. So that will be about $40 wasted.

What does a bypass valve look like ...anyone got a pic...
I went to Home Depo and got a water resistant air filter pad. I cut out just enough out of the filter to cover the hole from where the intake gets air from under the car. It is removable the way I have set it up...So when it rains I put it on. I know about the not driving in huge puddles unless ofcourse, it is a state emergency and we got almost a foot of water flooding every single highway......then....hmm...I guess I'll paddle. ;)

Ben,
I was referring to the price of a new filter. I have the AEM shorty so I didn't purchase the bypass, though my brother has one on his SI.

Hi, my second posting to this forum! LOL.

Had to choose a username when I signed up for this forum. Couldn't think of a favorable nickname for something that related to my favorite entertainment, mountain biking. Looked around and saw my Linux Lager coaster sitting around. I also take up Linux as a hobby (not a hardcore user, but have been a user since very early Slackware 0.9x kernel versions). I used Slackware for the longest of time until Mandrake caught my attention few years back (I was never tempted to use Redhat). I just started to use SuSE, but only because I got the entire box with the latest stable version of kernel for free (not the free download version).

Oh, I enjoy beer too. Haha. Ziegenbock is my current favorite... I shift around from time to time though.

Ah, just so happens I also own a "Vivid Yellow Mica" (stated on my vehicle price tag) MP3.

My goal around here and on the internet is to hopefully be able to find PLENTY of aftermarket quality parts for the MP3. Love reading about pocket rockets anyways. Interesting stuff even though I'm no expert in the matter.

So let's see if I can beef up my little car within reason and STILL have a valid vehicle bumper-to-bumper warranty. There's so much to learn and I just need more free time to pick some of it up. =)

hixtrix, you have 341 out of 1500 under your signature. How do you find out what production number your vehicle came from? I thought I read an article a while back that said there was really no easy idenfication unless you call the Mazda people up and asked them. Just for curiosity sake
:D , I'd be interested in finding out the number for my car too. Thanks for da help.

My bad hitrix, I wasn't trying to be an ass or anything. I just wanted to make sure no one wasted their money. As for me, I custom made my CAI, it only cost about $85 to make, and I haven't put a bypass valve on it yet. It's mainly the money issue. If they were $15 I'd get one definately. But I'm very carefull when I drive in the rain.
