What about the 2013 Ford Escape?

wrongly positioned carpet padding... sounds like human error to me and not a build quality issue whenit comes to type of material that was used. If anything is installed improperly it can cause issues.

Then it's a worker quality issue, it's not just one or two vehicles it's 8,000+ I own a Ford vehicle (Mercury Mountaineer to be exact) so many original parts made with cheap plastic that broke down. Especially one major problem with the harmonic balancer. The damn thing was half rubber half metal, the metal part separated from the rubber wheel which made the s belt ride the inner rubber part. There's also the mysterious crack on the back plastic panel everyone deals with and the cheap paintjob which after 4 years of use started chipping away from simple car washes. Just no effort in making quality products.

Sounds like my mazda... My 94 f150 doesnt have a single cracked panel not even a cracked dash

Edit: It sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder with fords in general. Personally every ford I've owned has had issues due to my own neglect and adbuse and not by design. Ive had more issues with my mazda then any ford i've owned. Ford and mazda share a lot of parts with each other so by default mazda should be crap then?

I don't get the plastic oil filter housing idea (should be metal IMO), plastic intake manifolds (both on a mazda)... even BMW is going plastic intake manifolds and oil filter housings... its just the nature of the beast with modern cars. If your major complaint is due to plastic parts then by all means with it 80's model cars and older. Cars simply are not designed to last like they used to when it comes to basic parts.

Ford Escape (model year 2013) reliability still tbd...

Stealth it's not about a "chip on my shoulder" because I happen to think Ford makes substandard vehicles. Go into explorerforum.com and see the many many threads where more than just 10-15 people are experiencing the same issue. The part that gets me is that Ford refuses to accept any accountability. They get thousands of complaints on the same exact problem but ignore everyone's issues. Mazda is a lot better when it comes to this.

I had a Mazda Mx-6 that I absolutely abused when I was young but the car was as strong as nails, until finally the tranny went after about 160,000 miles. Even then the only thing that went was the Reverse gear. I drove it for another 6 months with no Reverse (Don't ask what method I used if I needed to go in reverse) :D didn't have much money back then to replace the car.

You're talking about housings and such I'm talking about actual moving parts. To make cars lighter and more fuel efficient of course they need to lessen the amount of metal used. Harmonic balancer should be all metal like the replacement OEM part was, ok they redesigned the part to make it all Metal but I needed the original to breakdown and spend hundreds of dollars on the repair before I had it replaced. Also the cheap mechanism for the AC/Heat the actuator is a piece of plastic that switches from AC/Heat and overtime it cracks and breaks and depending when it broke you are either stuck with AC or just Heat (was AC for me) to get to it you have to take the whole dash apart.

I think your basing your judgment on all fords are crap based off of one model. The mazdaspeed protege is known to blow the engines in stock form, break diffs without any abuse ect.. but that doesnt make all mazdas crap. Take the Porsche Cayenne... they lost a grip ton of money due to issues with that car and almost would of been better off not even makeing that car but does that make the entire line up crap.. nope.

Either way we are way off topic and we will never know without letting time go by on what issues the 2013 escape will have. The carpet issue in my eyes is a small issue.

Yeah, I guess like you said before we will all see in time.

thoughts...

Ford could work just fine for my daily driving needs. Ford could last long enough until I would have it replaced. Ford's gas consumption could make no big impact in our budget. Ford overall quality could be okay for our family .... etc.

Mazda, everything above + the smile while I am driving it (this has no price) :):):).

had two Ford trucks and two mazdas. One truck's A/C went out and one Mazda A/C went out. Other than that, all the vehicles have been strong vehicles.

What I have to say about Ford - The mileage mentioned is far different than the actual mileage. I was also surprised how much a rotor from Ford cost! I'm hoping that Mazda rotors don't cost much. ;-)

I read an article a month or two in either Motor Trend or Car and Driver on a Ford Focus. They said their car came with the wrong shifter knob. Apparently, their model Focus could not be had with the manual shifter mode, and the shift knob had it... (even though it wasn't connected to anything).

So, there's that. LOL

A recall is the prudent solution for Ford to deal with what seems to be a manufacturing defect.

Change title to recall thread maybe. Today they are more common, automakers are less likely to try dodging safety issues, the negative PR is too much.

At the pace they make cars today, defects are common and to be expected. you have to give ford or any maker props for handling something before it comes a issue that affects users.

28,500 Escapes sold in month of June alone, huge number.
