First I'd like to say sorry for not being active here the past few months, but I figured I would share my news with you all...
The MS6's mods were AEM CAI, SU BOV, ATP DP, GHL catback, NGK Iridiums, CP-e Standback, WOT box, COBB Inlet pipe, SU rear bone mount, SU stiff diff, Prosport boost, egt, and wideband, TWM SS stage 2 w/ bushings, and SPC ball joints.
Mileage- 48xxx.
Well there is a lesson to be learned- two weeks prior I ran a newer SL55 AMG down the 2 lane highway from a dig. I 2-step launched it, and the MS6 went hard as it should. (Will do a 1.8 60ft at the track- I have the slips!) I started to overtake the AMG in second, but DUMBASS me shifted from 2nd back into 1st somehow. I didnt get off the clutch, the instant deceleration and sight of the tach going to 8k in a hurry was enough for me to push the clutch back in LIGHTNING fast. However, it was too late- she wound up and went HIGH. Definitely past 8k. All said and done the engine didnt seem quite as smooth running as before. Nothing super noticeable except to me. Then sure enough, let it idle every other day or so and it would smoke. I figured that the turbo seals went. No biggie, I have another on the shelf I was going to use for a PG reworked K04 core.
Fast foward to two weeks later. Nothing fabulous, heading to work at 6:30am. Stopped at the red light and took my right turn on red. Noticed the car across from me must have gotten his green, because he got going quickly towards me. I then accelerated about 2/3 to 3/4 throttle to about 4500rpm, shifted and BOOM!!! Smoke in the rearview, sounds of engine hitting the bottom of the car. I shut off the key and coasted over to the shoulder. I was devastated more than pissed, I knew it was related to my idiot-shifting from weeks prior. I opened the hood to see if anything was visible. Nope, but as I turned away from the car and took my phone out of my pocket, I heard a sound. Like the sound when your gas grill lights. HOLY F!! oil on my downpipe caught FIRE!!! You want to see a 6'5" 300lb guy start dancing? Do that!! I flagged down a guy and thankfully he had a gallon of water. Dumped it all over the rear of the engine and took care of the fire. WOW. That scared the crap out of me.
So now what? Call Mazda roadside? (Still covered under the 4yr 50k bumper to bumper warranty) They are just going to tow it to the dealer, where they can see my mods and tell me to go screw, right? Well, lets see..... I called a local towing company to bring it back to my house. $80 later it was in the driveway, and I used my winter beater for the rest of the week.
Saturday began the surgery. With the help of my buddy dan I took out every mod and put all my stock parts back in. SUBSTORY- Back in May my front catalytic converter melted and broke apart, flowed down to the second cat and plugged up the exhaust. (this was before my downpipe, but I found all this when I did the downpipe install because I knew the cat blew up) when I did the install I saved EVERYTHING, including the chunks of cat. conv.....
So now we are putting my stock airbox, exhuast, etc. back in, and I put the chunks of cat in the exhaust where I found them. Once it was all back to stock, I called Mazda, told them it died on the road with a big BOOM and it needed to be towed from my house. They picked it up that day and off it went.
Got a call from the service writier, and he said yes it needed a motor. Explained that it was covered under warranty and shouldnt be a problem, I would have it back in two weeks. Got a rental out of the deal too.
Two weeks comes and goes, no word. I called to see how things were, turns out the tech found my cat chunks and they ordered two new cats, two new O2 sensors, and a turbo too. I was also informed that the connecting rod went through the block and right into the starter, putting a dent in that- so the starter was on order as well.
All said and done- TWO MONTHS LATER!
New intake manifold- they claimed it had engine debris in it.
New complete motor- the piston turned 90* in the bore and hit the head, so they didnt bother saving much of the old motor.
New starter due to the damage.
New Flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing- "surface contamination and engine debris in between the two masses of the dual-mass flywheel" SAWEEEEEEET!
New turbo, first and second cats, and new 02 sensors, up and downstream.
I have the receipt- 4 pages long of parts and the diagnosis.
And the kicker- total cost for me or you to do this out of our pocket-
$17,000.... thats right. THE VALUE OF THE CAR!
I called Mazda customer service to inquire about the length of time it took. The dealership was FANTASTIC- they were waiting for parts more than anything because not too much is stocked in the US anymore, the motor came straight from Japan. Mazda customer service paid me the TWO months worth of car payments, AND a $200 service credit for parts or service. Thats another $1000!!!!!
The service writer said the bill they were submitting to mazda was $12,000 because of the book warranty labor times and dealer cost on the parts. So all in all- Mazda paid $13,000 to fix the car.
Need less to say, anyone want a beautiful 06 Veloctiy Red Mica MS6? Now with the new engine broken in, I am looking to sell it. And no worries- it is a Mazda Certified Pre-owned Vehicle, so it has an 8yr/100k powertrain warranty- so its good for another 50k miles or 4 more years!!!!
