Weird Noise, hopefully nothing

At about 3k to 3500 rpm i get a weird whistling noise, sounds like somethin is blockin the intake or something. any ideas on what could it be??
 
is it a whistling or a rattling?

i've had several heat shields on the stock emmissions bits of the exhaust come loose and make interesting noises at different RPM ranges on the miatas i've owned/driven.
 
lmao dude i was just about to update my post. i checked into it a little more and noticed the heat shield is crackin around the bolts. i thought it was somethin with the intake since theyre in the same region lol you are the man, thanks. i just installed my stereo tonight, just got finished so i dont have to listen to it anymore. lol ill keep an eye on it and when it gets worse ill replace it. thanks man. hows that new engine runnin?? breakin it easy i hope.
 
I had a similar whistling problem. Turned out that my ETS intercooler was warped where it connected to the coldpipe, and the flange acted like a reid which created the whistling. Sent my intercooler in to ETS, and they fixed it for me no charge.

if you can't do it yourself, get someone to weld the cracks immediately. You don't want to just play your music loud enough to mask the noise from any cracks that might someday become exhaust leaks. Besides, a good running MX5 sounds awesome enough to turn the stereo off during a good hard drive.

And, thanks for asking... New motor now has 45 miles on it. Aside from the first run to initially seat the piston rings, I've been keeping it under half throttle, but making sure I'm shifting around enough to vary the RPM's constantly to keep from glazing the cylinders... the first 20 miles the new motor felt kind of "blah"... but in the 4 drives I put in today, the motor is starting to really feel like its coming to life... I know most of it has to do with the fact that the ECU has left the default "limp" mode, and is actually controlling fuel delivery properly... but every drive it seems to become more "peppy"... already it feels more responsive than the old motor did before it died... its going to be very tough indeed to keep my lead foot in check the rest of the week before the first planned oil change this weekend... every time I go around a corner, its very, very tempting to just stomp on it right before the apex, just to see what a "fresh" motor is like... but I'm going to stick with the breakin method just to make sure this motor can be "all that it can be"...

I really can't wait until I can beat on my car like I used to again :D

No i know, i was just joshin. My buddy adam is really good with a welder so ill get that handled. Ive had no stereo since i bought the car, until last night, so i had no choice but to listen to the engine, which sounds mighty fine. Im just sick of being paranoid because every little rattle or road noise freaks me out lol

Glad the new motor is breakin in nicely. I know what you mean about how tempting it is lol. Its hard not to get your foot in it around those corners.
