I have a little pipe sticking out on the left side of the engine compartment, I think its something called the evaporator drain?
Should it not have a hose connected to it and should it be leaking water when the air con hasn't been on?
I can't speak to the hose issue, but how do you know that the AC hasn't been on? Unless you've modified the controller it comes on under various conditions when you might not expect it to. See this thread:
