Weird Internet Explorer problems

First off, I'm a software developer, and I'm VERY proficient with a computer. I do, however, use Internet Explorer as my browser <GASP>(eekdance)... :D. Also, running Windows XP Pro.

Anyhow, in the last month or so, occaisionally I'll try to go to a web page (doesn't matter where) and it comes back as "The Page cannot be found" with a reason of a "DNS Error". A refresh will fix it. Sometimes one refresh, sometimes 2 or 3. I've run Ad-Aware, various virus scanners, and heard about a virus QHosts which sounded like it modified DNS settings, but it wasn't found on my machine with Symantec's tool. It happens on my fiancees machine which is on the network, sharing a cable modem. We are behind a D-Link 614+ router. The router logs don't show much, except for occaisional "Ping of death detected" messages, but this doesn't happen when we're experiencing the problem.

Its really just a nuisance, and it pisses me off that I haven't found out what it is yet. Anyone?

EDIT: Maybe its my cable providers DNS servers, I dunno. Are there any free ones I could try out there?

i had simliar problems which i could not figure out...ive been using firefox now for weeks without a hitch..love it too, and its free.

i know its kinda not a solution, but it worked for me. i got sick of dealing with MSIE.

Yeah, I've been meaning to try it. LOL, I just clicked the damn link to d/l firefox and got page not found 3 times. AHAHAHHA HELP ME!!!!!!!! (dark) (pow)

(rofl)

the only issues ive had is you have to download s*** that comes with MSIE, like flash and s***. but if youre on cable shouldnt be a prob, like 2 min max.

Definitely sounds like it's something out of your control (ie the cable company's DNS servers). I'd give them a call and see what they say.

I remember my first cable modem (the original motorola cybrsufr big clunky thing) would periodically lose sync for a few seconds, and then come back on...maybe you're experiencing something similar.

Yeah, I've reset my modem a couple of times. And my router.

tracert who's s***? Its weird, any address I type into tracert www.google.com www.protegemp3.com etc gives output like:

Tracing route to www.google.akadns.net [64.233.167.99]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 10 ms 23 ms 6 ms 10.45.160.1

And so on? What does this mean?

I had the same damned problem during this past winter. I tried screwing around w/ my router (Netgear) and changing settings on my Win98 box. Nothing seemed to make a difference. Then all of a sudden, it started working normally again, which leads me to believe it was an ISP thing. Not much help to you, but maybe give your ISP a shout and see what's up.

I've been having the same problems with Mozilla and IE. Looks like it isn't my computer that is the problem. That makes me feel better.

OMG this is driving me crazy... I can't figure it out either. I've been using mozilla too, but my mother need ie6.0 for her works onlie service. Someone please find out what the hell is going on....

go click on start --> run --> type in "CMD" with no quotes --> your dos prompt comes up type in ipconfig /flushdns --> should give you a msg saying done or dns flush --> reboot --> try again, if it still happens its a problem with your provider, if you cant load the page, try typeing in the ip address of the page and not the dns name

finally!! i made posts about this over a month ago and no one said anything. i dont have as many problems as i used to. when i do, its only with this website. it loads pages, but its still slow as hell.

That means your internet is down or at least you can't get out of your private internet.

From that tracert, you are making it fine to, what I'm assuming is, your router (192.168.0.1) then you make it fine to your local intranet (10.45.160.1). But, then your packets get lost. So, from that I'd say your local intranet is not connected to the internet.

Hope that helps you troubleshoot.
