ok well i have my 01 Mazda Protege MP3. 175km(canada) and i just reciently got it.

at 2500rpm and only 2500rpm i get an engine noise/maybe knocking coming from the engine. when we opened the hood it sounded like it was coming from the top half of the engine. a mechanic was thinking lifters or something to do with them but no one is totally sure.

Has anyone else had this problem or has the solution? thanks

i never heard the sound. my dad did when he was driving it though. i will ask him and see.

what they came up with is:

spun bearings
valves need to be adjusted
valves getting no oil
and may have been running 87 octane gas before instead of premium gas and getting engine knock
or pieces in the cat resonating/exhaust leak

could any of those work?

btw they werent thinking spun bearing cause the sound coming from the top of the engine instead of the bottom? or is that irrevelant?

mine sounds similar but not as loud.

yours sounds like it does it as soon as your rpms keep going up. and does it for a wider range of rpm's.

mine only does it at 2500rpm, if you hold it there it does do it. up to 2400rpm you dont get the sound. and at 2600rpm and above you dont get it. its only at 2500rpm dead on. not idleing either.

you won't get knock from running 87 octane...the ECU is programmed to change the timing when it recognizes non 91-octane gas...I run 87 all winter long...

ok. what about anything else? im starting to doubt the spun bearing idea. but i still have no idea what it is.

i dont have the car atm. its still parked at the shop. i will get a video over the weekend

I don't know how to tell which one without taking it apart. And the cause: playing too hard and/or poor maintenance schedule... (drive2)

aright thanks. im hoping for the rod bearing. that means i dont have to take the engine out.

and it will be driven harder than normal. but its going to be regularily maintained and synthetic oil and everythind like that from now on.

is there any better or stronger bearings to replace them with?
