Water in hatch video

I was all set to purchase a 2014 3, but then I saw this video:

This concerns me. Has anyone with a 2014 hatch noticed rain/water collecting inside the hatch?

(FWIW: I come from a Mazda family. My dad has owned a 323, 626, RX-7, and Miata. My brother has owned a 323, an old Mazda pickup, and a second gen 3. I own a Mazda Protege, which I purchased in 1998. None of us have ever had any rusting issues.)

I doubt that is an issue with all of them, and if you have any problems they come with a 3 year warranty for a reason.

Using the referenced video you can pause it repeatedly just as the water starts to flow out and you can see that most of the water is coming from the top cover/airfoil although a smaller amount comes across the glass from the lower referenced area that is now above the point.

It was raining on my way home. I just opened my hatch and only saw enough drips to be from the water that was on the hatch itself moving because of the angle change when opening the hatch. It wasn't like some secret reservoir was draining out.

I would love to take a look at this in person, but I'm still waiting for my car to be built and shipped.

The volume of water flowing in the video looks like about what you'd expect from the bottom of the hatch being raised. What the maker of the video did NOT show is whether anything inside the hatch got wet. He throws out a theory that water hides inside the hatch, and a bunch of unrelated data. If water is hiding somewhere in the hatch because of a leak, then it should be possible to trace by taking the interior trim pieces off. That would prove/disprove the theory put forth in the video, not a trickle of water running down a hatch when raised.

I haven't opened the hatch since the last time the car was out in the rain, probably about a week ago. It has been driven a couple times since, but otherwise has been in the garage.

I just went out to the garage and opened the hatch and about 4 or 5 drops came out on each side at the location show in the video. The maker of the video is correct that there is an issue with some water collecting somewhere in the hatch that can remain for quite a while.

I agree. I don't see any water inside the cargo area in the video.
I only saw water dripping down from spoiler. So what?
Is there a "Part-II"?

Water doesn't leak into the cargo area. It is trapped inside the hatch.

I looked more closely and I think I see where the water goes in and where it is SUPPOSED to come out.

Here is the drain hole at the bottom of the hatch. Water that goes inside the hatch SHOULD come out here:

There is a fold in the metal you can see from the underside at the edge where the spoiler attaches:

This creates an opening shown here:

Water running off the back of the roof can go in that opening. Apparently, some water that enters here can go into the interior of the hatch and doesn't come out the drain hole in the bottom, but instead stays in there until you open the hatch and it drains back out the top.

In the video, the hose is directed so water will go straight into this opening.

Anyway, I went back to the dealership today for a test drive. Before hitting the road, I asked the salesman to open the hatch. The car was completely dry, and yet, streams of water rolled down both sides. The video is not faked, nor is the guy in the video exaggerating what's happening. That said, I doubt this would lead to serious issues as long as you open the hatch to drain the water whenever your car gets wet. I don't have a garage, so I'm thinking about how big of a hassle this would be for my personal situation. I haven't made a final decision, but I'm leaning toward the four-door (or maybe an SI, which are too inexpensive right now to ignore).

Not a M3, but my previous car (Dodge Magnum) had the same issue. I had that car for 6 years. The hatch collected water worse than the M3 hatch. It never caused any problems to the car. Occasionally the door would drip on the carpet or something in the back of the car, but that was minor and rare. The channel with the water in it does stay dirtier than the rest of the car and is more of a hassle to wash if you want to keep it looking good.

Water doesn't enter the hatch when the car is sitting still unless it is directed in at an angle like in the video. It does enter when you are driving in the rain.

After I was my car I always open the doors, hood, and trunk, and wipe any excess water. In the hatch, there's always some water that drains out from the spoiler down the window and I leave it up for till I'm done wiping down the doors.

That's what I have been doing with all the cars I've owned in the past. When I had a black car, I actually used my shop vac to blow out the water in the crevices, wheels, wheel lugs, rubber seals at the windows, wherever there was 2 panels that connected, there was water lurking. I know it may have been OCD, but on a black car I hated seeing those water lines dry up.

Yes it is. Other people are complaining about it too. It's very unfortunate.
