want to know more about the P5

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and have just recently put in a downpayment for a 2003 P5. This will be my first Mazda and I just have a few questions on reliability. You help is much appreciated.

1) Does the P5 have a Ford designed engine?
2) If the engine is by Ford, should I expect any major problems?
3) Any other notorious problems I should be aware of?
4) How expensive is the regular dealer maintenance compared to others like Honda and Toyota? I'm from Toronto, Canada by the way.
5) What after-market performance mods are available for the P5?

Motor is all Mazda, baby! But Ford does own a big ol' chunk of Mazda and there have been other Fords with Mazda motors (previous Escorts and Probes) Dunno 'bout the maintenance. There are lots of mods available. Pretty much anything you can think of or afford. The only things I can't seem to find are a supercharger and ECU.

there is an insurance clip under the center armrest, and the suspension is easy to work on, and very well designed. the front edge of the hood tends to get chipped pretty quick. Get ready to own a really fun car to drive :)

P.S. You will learn anything you need to know, watching what is said on here.(yellowp5)

1) No, there are no Ford parts in this car
2) N/A
3) nothing "notorious" but some have reported tranny failures, and clunking in the front end. This car has been the most reliable model Mazda has produced to date according to CR.
4) maintenance is cheaper than Toyota/Honda, more than the domestics but not by much.
5) many many performance parts are available, some directly from Mazda at reasonable prices, visit the performance forums for more info.

I would like to know more about the Tranny Failures . Are they in the Sport Automatic or the 5 speed manual . Would like to knowas much informaion as possable . I read were on broke after 11,000 Miles and it was an automatic. I was going to put a thread on this subject. Thanks

most of the complaints on here with tranny problems are from the 5 speeds and deal with the shift forks. Common consensues is that they do not take well to slamming them into 3rd & 4th gear. just get into the habit of being nice to it and you'll never see an issue...

(common consensus as I said... I'm not garanteeing you won't.)

I heard that Mazda 6 and Mazda MPV is made out of the same structure and suspension from ford. Except protege and p5..etc

I heard that MPV and ford windstar is basicly deffernt look but with a lot of same parts of ford.

i've run into one SERIOUS problem since i got my p5...

...no matter where i am i always have an itch to drive my car...can't think about anything else :D

seriously no real mechanical problems only things were small things

Hello P5Can and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!! (stash)

NO the motor is NOT of ford design.....no major problems should be expected

as for performance mods that are availabe. there are about three diffrent turbo kits out...there are all sorts of suspension mods depending on what you want to do ...and there are numerous NA mods if you don't want to go with forced induction.

I've got a reaaly big problem with my P5. Wherever I go everyone keeps looking at it. Everyone and a while I have to get out and look over my car to make sure they aren't looking at something falling off or anything like that. Never fails everything is normal on the car. But ppl just still keep staring at it....:D

I have an '02 MP5 5 speed. Awesome to drive, awesome to look at. No problems at all with the clutch/tranny at all. 16,000 miles on it. And the '02 model was built in Hiroshima, and that I don't think has changed yet with later models, so it's all Japanese quality.

For dealer savings visit www.mazdausa.com (or maybe the Canada site) and download any dealer coupons you can find there.

Oh yeah, I do have a problem. I can't stop myself from using my remote to blink the lights on and off, it's sooo sweet...

Thank you all for the warm welcome.. Your advice has been very informative.

I've just recently sold my Integra GSR and decided on getting something more affordable that allows me to do some performance upgrades. After hearing some good things about the P5 I decided to look into test driving one. It drives and handles well except it needs more high end power. Does anyone have a dyno of a stock P5?

Also, I noticed some postings on the forum about short-throw adaptors. What are the prices like on these?

Sorry... one more question. What are the best bolt-on products that will give me more high end power? I'd like to stick with bolt-on mods for now just to keep my factory warranty.

Thanks again

Stock p5 dynos at 98hp, 103ft lbs torque at wheel (Or is it 101)? Do a search "p5 dyno" and it should pop up, there is a pic.

Short throw shifters are 100-150 bucks. There is B&M, Kartboy, and TS____(something, I cant remember). Tom from Kartboy is also a member of the site, pm him.

There is no ECU mod. I dont know what "bolt on" products give high end power, since bolt-on usually means exhaust, intake, etc. The only major power gains you will get will be from forced induction (turbo) or an all-motor normally aspirated setup (increased compression pistons, flow heads, exhaust, etc).

And BTW, while the car is entirely Japanese, the ECU in some models does have "Ford" printed on it. These cars share nothing, however, with the focus or any other ford.

I don't want to be the sour apple but...
I've gotten probs with my belts making noice, but I'm pretty sure that its easy to fix. And becareful with the paint, its really thin and can chip easily. Other than that, I have to agree with everyone else, the P5 is great!
I love it love it love it love it lots :D

Not true, the Mazda 6 is a new platform designed by Mazda that Ford will use for the next Taurus, it is not shared with the MPV.
The MPV and Windstar share no parts except the V6 Duratec engine, if you see them side by side you will notice the MPV is much smaller than the Windstar
