I am getting anxious waiting for the new 16x powerplant, am I the only one? I am trying to plan ahead this time, since I know that I am going to want one. So I decided to start my 16x Savings Fund Jar. I will keep the contents updated in my sig below. :)

Having driven 12a's, 13b's, 13b Turbos, and the latest Renesis, I am very eager to enjoy the improved powerplant. It got me to thinking about how Mazda was going to introduce the next powerplant. Will they release it in the tried and true RX-8 platform, and market it as a limited "Mazdaspeed" edition? Much like 1984-85 when the released the RX-7 with a 13B and Fuel injection known as the GSL-SE. Or will they release the 16x in an all new platform?

I'm in the same boat as you waiting on the 16X. I will be matching in my own jar what you save. I too love the Rotary and have driven over 520K miles in total on seven of them since '71. I have a 04' RX-8 with 38K on it that I will trade in on the next RX. I wonder if Mazda will come out with two different models with the 16X one sport one sedan? I hope it's not two more years till we see it!

I didnt even know they were putting out a new rotary. Hopefully it is a reliable fuel sipper and I'll be all over it.

Wow, over half a million miles! That truly does make you an Old Rotor!(drive2)

So out of all of those, how many engines have had to be replaced?

The first one, RX-2 water leaked into engine(O-rings were redesigned later). Mazda covered it and it was off warranty.

Amazing! But did you baby them, or drive the @#$% out of 'em using the redline buzzer as your shift indicator?(headbang)

Rotaries are in kind of a special class when it comes to emmissions and fuel effeciency from what I understand.

Its not going to be a turbo beast. But I'm sure it won't take long for people to start modding them.

However, even if it is a nice, clean economical rotary, its still good as it keeps our Mazda making money so they can later release a twin turbo 3 rotor with the new larger rotors (24x). :)

since they are staying with the side port design, they would do a lot better to just supercharge it. renny owners have had more luck with superchargers due to the downfall of the design.

going more into economy and emissions means taking the fun out of the motor, IMHO. i don't doubt that the car will still be tons of fun, but it won't go nearly as far into the aftermarket as the rx7 has.
