Viper 790xv

Just wanted to let you guys know I am getting some pretty bad reports about the Viper 790xv alarm remote starter and any DEi product with that 2 way remote.

Apperently damn near everyone with it is going through remotes every few months. Ofcoarse if your remote dies on you, you have a serious issue as you can't disarm the alarm.

I was going to order one but my former boss just advised me to go with the Viper 550ESP instead as it doesn't use that remote.
I talked tp the a few people I knew with it and sure enough they have had issues with the remotes aswell.

That's strange, I've got 3 employees at work with them and they don't have any problems at all, they've all been in for over 3 months now. You may have gotten a bad batch.

I was looking into getting one of those keyless-entry upgrade kits...that way I won't have to worry about the remote not working...I can just take it to Mazda

Greg, the brain and everything has ben fine but those damn remote only seem to last 6 months. Now not being an owner of one i can not account for any possible damage the remotes may be sustaining but I have been warned against them by a few people now that I find best to listen too.

Damn, I was just fixing to get the DEI 2-way system too. Damn, looks like Compustar may be back in the picture.

Actualy I have heard alot worse about the compustar. The remotes just seem like one more thing to break and a remote needs to be able to sustain a beating.
Its only a warning not a guarentee.

What remote-start alarm with a 2-way remote would be good to get then? I'm looking to get one installed here in a week or two.

Would I be better off just getting a normal remote setup instead of the 2way for now then adding the 2way later? Or just say screw it and not get the cool toy of a 2way remote.

I am going to a show Sunday and i will ask around a bit more and see what some other shop owners have experienced.

I am avioding them and going with the standard one way system with basicly all the same features without a possible breakable remote that costs over $100 to replace.

I have the DEI Hornet 700T keyless entry upgrade alarm and it works without a hitch and you can keep your factory remotes.

I've recently installed a few DEI Avital alarm systems and they work excellent. But i've also heard there are issues with the Viper systems.

Just out of curiosity, why does everyone buy car alarms when it's been proven that they don't really work that well in comparison? Is it for a deterrent system? I always thought that the best anti-car theft system was the Pedal Locks. Pain in the ass to remember to put on and off all the time, but if it works it works. Anyway, just wondering.

They have been having some problems with the remotes. Most of the time, it's the rough treatment that leads to problems. Most dealers will code you a new remote for free if you have a problem. Mine was fine, until I kept dropping it. Just swapped it out and started taking better care of it.

Goes through AAA baterries like it is it's job though.

The way I see it...

an alarm deters the common thief who is after your personal belongings: car audio, radar detectors, cds, etc.

An alarm, however, will not deter the car thief because today's car thief is smarter than silly alarms with starter kills. There are countless ways around stock and aftermarket alarm systems. Once they know what you have installed, they can work out a plan, then nab your car at a later date when they see you.

IMO, one of the most inovative designs is made by Sears. The Diehard alarm battery. Basically, the alarm is embedded in the battery and has nothing to do with the rest of the electrical system. If you try to start the car 3 times, (each time the battery will cut out to warn the user) it will disable the battery and a code will have to be typed in. It won't stop people from getting inside your car, but it will stop them from moving it. It would take a real talented theif to run around the city trying to steal cars with a 12v car battery in his back pocket. Its just not something thieves plan for.

You may be able to get around it with another car and jumper cables but I'm not sure about that...I know when the battery died in my cougar, the alternator would run the car but as soon as i turned it off the car wouldn't start and I would need a jump

An alarm is only as good as the install. Get tricky and a theif will regret getting into your car and try to get.

My goal is to hurt a theif in my car.

I have heard stories of people putting sharp spikes under their dash...I get real tricky with the metal support bracket most head units come with....I make sure there is no way to just "pull" the unit out of the dash.

One time I forgot to lock my car and i found my cds missing and my head unit halfway pulled out of the dash....they gave up and took off because they couldn't get behind it to remove the bracket.

I like the battery thing.. It sounds like the best bet so far. Well as far as stealing the car goes. I hate thieves.

Well yo ucan do an alarm 2 ways.
1) if the alarm goes off, the car won't start.
2) If the alarm is not OK the car won't start.
It all comes down to how you wire a relay.
It can be set to allow continiuity on the start wire until the alarm goes off or it can be wired to only show continuity if the alarm is disarmed and has power. Of coarse if the brain dies the car won't start so the more secure way isn't usualy used.

Stolen cars are the easy one to protect against. Its equipment in the car that is hard to keep safe as it can be taken very quickly and if it can't the theif will likely trash the car.

Thats why the Viper 790 is cool. It goes off and calls you then you can run to the car with your Gloc and take care of the problem

THey will take anything not just audio. Atleast mod theft id less common on proteges then Civics.
