USB interface issues

Mazda 3 MZR CD 2013
I've just purchased a 2013 Mazda 3 MZR CD which has a USB port in the armrest compartment. I have an 8GB USB stick with ~1000 songs organised in folders for each album which works fine in my wife's 2012 Mazda 2 USB port, but in my car it seems to see the USB stick as an iPod and just plays the songs in first folder only - (it might be seeing folders as playlists). Selecting random play once again just plays the songs in the first folder only randomly. I've tried putting all my songs into one folder but then it just sees a maximum of 255 songs.
It seems as though by making the USB port iPod compatible, they've stuffed up the basic USB stick handling. The manual indicates that the CD player allows you to play mp3s randomly through the current folder or randomly across all folders (as is the functionality for the USB in the base model Mazda 2). Pity this functionality no longer works with the Mazda 3 USB.

Anybody else come up against this problem / have any solutions?
