US Diesel's big splash introduction

Another one bites the dust...

The downside of this trend is we're showing them that failing to bring the diesel to market isn't costing them any sales. (doh)

Indeed..drove a couple Hyundais today..no thanks (Tucson) and how much again?(Santa Fe)

Congrats.

Thanks. I saw people getting good prices on the 17s, so I solicited some quotes. Turns out there weren't any 17s left in that config, but my indifference about when/if I get the gas model helped me negotiate dispassionately and get a pretty good price on the 18. Got better than 10% off MSRP after the $500 customer cash. No dealer options.

Even if the diesel were out today, It would probably cost me about $6000 more if similarly configured, assuming no discounts for a while. That helped me rationalize the purchase. If it ever comes out, I'll have some thinking to do. WA state, with the sales tax, makes upgrading so much more painful.

Yep the sales tax is a big hit. So is the registration and license.

With an intercooler the X will also have more torque than the NA engine, but also be more complex.

Closer than the regular gas-burner, but it will also have 50-75hp on the oil burner...which in a CUV matters a lot more to most people who aren't trying to tow a camper behind their glorified sedan.

the official diesel release must be imminent because...

Wait a minute............ theres a diesel coming to America? We should start a new thread on it!

Congrats on the CX-5. My sister is running round in a Mere AMG or something and its nowhere near as nice as may CX-5 (dont tell her I told you, she paid an arm and a leg).

No. See Mazda timeline below (red square):

The Mild HEV could be interesting. It likely refers to a 48V motor system that reportedly can improve driving dynamics; giving instant torque and compensating for/eliminating the feeling of turbo lag. Reportedly coming to a number of late 2019 cars, including Kia Sportage.

The mild hybrids that have hit the market so far have been disappointing to say the least. I would skip that idea and just move on to a PHEV or EV with range extender.

Yeah, we ended up shuffling vehicles a bit. First we donated my Focus ST because the exhaust needed replacing and I didn't want to throw any more money into it given there were ~155k miles and I couldn't fit a rear facing car seat in it. Then I finally had to stop driving the Outback because the insurance company pulled the plug. So we took a two-year lease on the CX-5 since I didn't think I'd be holding onto it long term (still hoping for a diesel someday or maybe a 6 with AWD). My wife absolutely loves it, but I missed having a car and was still pining for a nav with traffic or AA. Then I saw a new 2017 Ford Fusion Platinum AWD advertised for $28249 ($12k off MSRP) and I said what the hell, let that be my commuter car. I mostly drive the CX-5 on weekends.

30% off MSRP? Not too shabby. Good luck with both!

Otherwise known as #nothingburger- look its coming eventually we all know that- and I get limiting/banning them by x-date in congested cities with air issues, but both VW and greenpeace can collectively go suck it. This has zero impact on Mazda bringing the diesel here- imo. If they get it how they want and it meets epa and carb regs we'll get it- question is for how long.

BTW- I'm an even bigger fan of using cheaper fuel in a combustion engine that may not put out as much torque as a diesel but makes up for it in hp all while getting nearly as good fe all while being inherently cleaner. Seeing the diesel as (until the next best thing comes along) type solution..sky-x can't come soon enough so long as it works as designed in the rigors of the real world- time as always will tell. But that's some bs in Germany..buy diesels they're great, durable, use less fuel- hell we'll even make them cheaper to buy to.. diesel? You can't drive that filthy polluting thing here anymore go somewhere else..that's some bs right there.
