UDP had anyone had problems?

My boss keeps telling me that people on his VW forums talk down on the udp because it can "unbalance" your engine. He has cited some interesting points and I was wondering if anyone had encountered "sonic resonance" or any kind of issues at all while using a udp on our cars. Honestly, I noticed a nice gain on throttle response with very little trade-off. I have a couple of thousand miles with it on an the car runs great, maybe VW engines are just cheaply made (wink)

It is not the balance, it is harmonics and it has to do with the power pulse resonating when the engine reaches a certain RPM. The harmonics cause your bearings to wear faster. The way the UDP increases power is in weight reduction. For every 1 pound you remove from the crank frees up 2.7 horsepower, but in changing the rotational weight it shifts the RPM range where the harmonics are strongest.

You can read more about it here...

no problems here. Going on two years with a full lightweight setup and udp

Certainly some engines suffer with a UDP, but the FSDE is not one of them. I've never seen anyone on here have any issues, and a lot of guys have been running them for years. Go for it, it's a nice bump in the lower RPM range.

Same here only no problems for 5 yrs....Unorthodox Racing UDP-crank & Medieval lightened water pump, alternator & gen 2 power steering pulleys.

im guessing you dont know much about proteges either then...
i know about the harmonic damper's purpose on other engines, but on the protege, it does nothing

If you refer to rotary engines, you are pretty right. If not, you're a bit too self confident. Learn first... like Bosch automotive handbook. Every piston engine is susceptible to harmonic vibration. As for I4, only the first orders are cancelled, V6 the 2nd orders aswell. All crank torsion vibration is reduced with flywheel and pulley mass and damped with the rubber part in pulley.

In reality, it works quite well with light flywheel and UDP (as in my engine) but one should know the downfalls of this solution, more vibration and bearing stress.

i havent seen one post with problems in the time ive been a member on here, i know about the harmonic vibration of engines, and im telling you there are no problems
whether or not there is more engine stress on bearings is hard to prove, until someone blows there engine up by putting the UDP on, then im gonna go ahead and say (again) UDP's dont cause problems on these cars

Whats the best way to install a UDP if you dont have access to an impact wrench? I have an auto so that limits my options as well I believe...

Stick a screwdriver in the opening on bottom of the bellhousing to lock the flywheel and use an impact when you can. I tightened mine with a breakover bar then went to a friend's house that had an impact. It was tight already but doublecheck = peace of mind.

I did not say anything about Protege's. I did not profess to be an expert in anything. I merely pointed to info on the subject in general for the original poster. No need to get hostile.

hahahahah thanks for all the help, and good news.

as for doing a udp with no impact, no problem, just stick that screwdriver down in the hole like you mean it, and use a torqe wrench to put the new one on.
