Turning DSC off fixes 2-3 miss-shifts?!

heh I dont have this problem without mm....I will install my mm tuesday and Im hoping for big improvement
I grinded one or twice but during normal driving not spirited my mistake I wasnt paying attention

the second night i had the car, i was shifting from 5th to 4th on the freeway, except i accidentally shifted to 2nd. it scared the s*** out of me, thank god i got the clutch in fast enough, it probably only reached 5,000rpm. i learned my lesson, ill be watching myself when shifting!

i hit 2-3 well, never really had an issue, my problem is 4-5, 5th gear seems to always be missing..

My issue is usually with 5th. It seems so far away from the rest of the gears. So to avoid missing, I turn my hand to the left (thumb pointing down) and nudge the gear shift up and away from me and I always find 5th no problem. Shifting into 6th is the same, pulling down and away from me.

When my trans is cold, I have a hard time getting into 2nd gear. When i'm leaving my complex, I'll shift into 2nd, and the shifter kinda goes into 2nd and is denied as I'm trying to pull into 2nd. If I had to imagine, it's as if theres a gear spinning and the teeth are pushing the shifter away from 2nd where as I'm trying to get it in the right spot. Sounds weird.

You make a valid point. However, I don't think that's the case with most of us. If we were driving it like it was a '69 Camaro, etc I think there would be a lot of blown transmissions. I honestly don't think its total driver error. Something is slightly flawed and it's not the driver.

I would say that I hit 3rd gear at WOT about 96% of the time but on those occasions were I miss it's really ******* annoying.

Has anybody who had this problem cured it by getting an aftermarket shifter?

Well the caliber srt4 has the same tranny and it doesn't suffer from the 2-3 mis shift bug, so I have to say it's linkage and motor/tranny mount related from my perspective.

I have about 1500 miles on my car and I've occasionally had a hard time hitting 3rd under brisk acceleration but I've found myself having the same issue a hand full of times in normal circumstances as well. Granted this doesn't happen often but its still annoying. I will be doing a short shifter w/ bushings and a motor mount eventually.

I just can't believe that the Mazda engineers didn't run into this issue while testing this car. Kind of makes me wonder if that really even pushed it that hard. On second thought they probably did but most likely wrote it off as driver error or something.

Don't get me wrong I love the car regardless but there's always room for improvement I suppose.

Not sure about that. My '99 Miata had one of the best tranny's I've felt, other than my S2000, but maybe comparing apples to oranges with RWD/FWD.

I've had this car about a week and a half now and already have about 800 miles on it (I commute alot). I've missed 3rd two or three times now and it's made me sick to my stomach every time (also have a nice rock chip already, but that's another story). I thought it was me, but I guess it isn't after reading the above. Every car I've had since starting to drive has been a manual and haven't had a problem until now. I've got a TWM short shifter and bushings sitting on my table that will be going in this weekend and Corksport inserts on the way. Also have 3 bottles of MT90 that'll go in probably in a few weeks, so hopefully this solves the issue. This problem doesn't seem to go away after the car heats up. It's always there, so I don't think it's a fluid issue. I think it's a linkage issue with this motor moving around more than it should in between shifts.

I also notice that with DSC off I dont grind on my 2-3 shift. I think when the traction control comes on it not only limits power but prevents shifts like 2-3 that would result in further loss of control.

After re evaluating the whole 2-3 misshift nonsense, I am really starting to believe it's the clutch pedal not being all the way down, combined with some binding in the linkage due to engine torque pulling the engine towards the front of the car, placing undue force on the cable.

Does anyone make a stainless steel braided clutch line for these cars? Might be worth looking into to prevent pressure loss in the clutch line.

Ive figure out how to stop the grinding. You have to walk the shifter into third. Dont move diagonally, which i know is bs, but its a engineering problem of some kind. Instead quickly goto neutral then straight forward into third. Flick your wrist to do it quickly. Trust me, it works. I think its linkage binding or something.
