TurboXS Hybrid BOV Installed!

Hey anyone of you guys been experiencing some torque loss with the valve. Seems like when I want to accelerate I need to put more gas into it to take off.

I thought that I did notice some power loss with the valve but I was hoping that It was just me reading too far into it. I hope that you dont actually loose power, do yo think it could be too many shims? I am running 4.

I'm am going to try and run different washers to see if theres a difference. Lestat thinks that it might be a vacuum leak.

I just talk to the tech at Turboxs and he said it has to be a leak around the flange or one of the hoses on the valve. I told him I was running 4 washers and he said it souldnt be opening to early, but to go ahead and try running 6.

Yeah I'm going to try and run 6 and test for leaks later tonight. Let me know how it goes itlownu and if you have results.

what are you guys talking about in the way of "washers"??? are you referring to how much pressure it needs to push the spring down from the top?

I'm guessing it has to do with the pressure so more washers equals more pressure. Can anyone confirm this?

thats what I was thinking, like when people say SHIMS, I am assuming when you take the top off you put in washers or shims above the spring to compress it more to give it the "hard" as opposed to "soft" feel. Too soft gives boost leak I heard so thats what I am assuming they mean when they put washers/shims in the make the spring compress more and not leak as much.

Would probably be the same as for bovs like the turbosmart that you twist to compress the spring

I tested different washer combos and I think I'm going to go with 2. 6 washers made the valve sound different and was too hard of a feel. 3 felt really similar to 4. 0 washers barely held the boost plus it made a weird sound after returning on idle. Anyone else here running two?

ive only played with 3 and 4... first couple of days 3 was fine then started feeling wierd (spring breaking in maybe?) now im at 4 and it seems ok but i think i have a leak in my recirc hose due to me cutting it for when i had hks and now being a little 2 short to go fully on the recirc pipe... im gunna try 5 tommorow to see what the feel is like

and speed858 what do you mean "too hard of a feel" ?

By too hard of a feel I meant that the car seemed to be working harder than it should of when accelerating up to 5k rpms. Seemed like I lost more torque when I increased washers. The more washers you have the more boost it will hold but above 4 seemed kind of excessive. I decided to go with the 2 washers because it feels the most like stock with zero drivability issues. I can definitely feel my torque gains have returned.

Does anyone have a way of measuring our cars with this valve like a dashhawk or something? This way someone could post different results such as boost or torque gains with each washer.

ALRIGHT, I AM IN THE PROCESS OF ANSWERING YOUR PRAYERS!! ;)

Today I ran to school (I'm a teacher, not a student :p) with 2 washers, mind you I've run 4 since install. I am no professional but I've worked on cars a lot for a few years although this is my first FI. Don't take this as fact, but simply my first driving impressions.

Impressions:
It feels like it opens MUCH sooner. On 4 washers I am used to being able to lift off the throttle a touch and get it to give almost a stutter about a half second before opening all the way. Cool sound. Today on 2 washers it seemed like at the slightest lift it would open up all the way. It also sounded like it might be a touch louder and it is definitly more abrupt.

I floored it from 22 vac in 4th just over 2,000 rpms, there seemed like a bit more lag than I am used to. Starting from about 500 rpms higher and trying the same thing there was very little lag and felt like it always does. Conclusion? I'm probably looking for something that isn't there, it's probably behaving exactly like stock.

My dashhawk (that what you guys wanted?? ;)) said I was holding 16.5 psi in third gear. Can't remember what I used to peak at on 4, but I will checked later.

Well, I would say that I would drive home on 4, but I left the other 2 washers in the garage..... SO I am going to drive home on 2, swap for 4, and then go back out. I think this will ultimately be a better comparisson run anyway. I will post up later on 4 vs 2.

Thanks lestat! You rock! I think that's why I like 2 so much is because it behaves exactly like stock.

Ok, so I lied.... I think I like the way 2 washers feel, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it feels more agile, but its definitly more abrupt when you lift off under med-high boost. Give me another day or two or get used to it, then I'll go back to four and drive immediately. I'll give some commentary then.....

and thanks 858 ;) I try my best

I've been running with 2 washers, just switched back up to 4 and did 2 hours of driving, one hour each way to a job interview. I got a 15.8-16.5 psi reading of max boost, so arguably the same as 2 washers. The power seems a lot more peaky and I am missing low end torque. Spool was faster on 2, I am almost positive. I will say that letting off the gas while in boost is less startling with 4. Maybe is closes earlier from venting or doesnt open as far because there is more pressure on the spring?

I am leaving tonight to go away with my girlfriend for the weekend to visit her parents. When I come back I'm going to run to 3 washers and see if I can get the low end torque back from 2, with the ease of drivng with 4.

And before someone says something, these are very very minor differences, but I enjoy picking things apart ;)

Yeah lestat! I too love to pick these things apart. Yeah the whole part about missing low end torque is just what I was talking about! I did a couple or bursts on the freeway the other day running 2 washers and it definately spooled faster. I agree about letting off the gas with boost for 4 is less starting, 2 is more abrupt. But I love my low end torque, it makes me smile every time I feel that.

2 fo sho!

any of you guys made a video ro yours? I have only seen 1 turbo xs hybrid mazdaspeed3 video on youtube but its poor quality and revving while parked with the hood open. I knwo you wont get hardly any boost revving while parked, its all when driving the car. I am hoping one of you guys may have made a drive-by video or how it sounds.

I took some sound recordings today, although they didnt turn out real well. I use photobucket for pics, anyone have a site I can upload to??
