Turboed MP5's rule

When I bought my Hiboost kit 4 years ago it was $3500 ($3800 now) but you without a doubt need to upgrade your clutch. I started slipping the second day at 8psi (clutchmasters stage IIR $390). Believe me you will need to factor this in and if you don't do the labor yourself that's probably another $400-500. I was curious on the turbo install myself and was told $1000-1500. I was planning on doing it myself anyway but to me that is just crazy.

^^ yeah my "1000 dollars more" would be a wideband (300), some other gauges (250), a clutch (200 for stock MSP clutch that can hold.. somewhere around 220whp)

ok, lemme see if i have this straight... u can't even use the stock P5 man-tranny with say 5-6lb boost?... i wuz hopin ta get off cheaper than that... ok... so if i were to get everything and do it myself (prob use a MSP turbo for easier install and because i don't plan on running high boost) how much do u figure it would cost, all inclusive, and how long would u think that it would take me with general car knowledge and probably 1 other person helping me who knew more than me?... another thing is that i need to check what warranty my parents have on it, because with the low mileage it has i can definately wait until the warranty has expired... i'm just tryin ta collect as much information as possible before i decide exactly what i want to do... this would be a really big investment for me and i just wanna know whether or not itz worth it

P.S. What is a wideband and what does it do?

yes you can. You can run like 7ish psi on stock tranny and block.

With msp turbo parts and such, all inclusive with gauges, wideband, etc.. I'd say easily 4k since that's how much I spent. I installed it all in two weeks working by myself .. and most (at least a full week) of that time was spent waiting on the last parts to arrive and riding my bike places in the middle of winter to get things welded and crap. Only about a week of time (winter break from class, took the time off from work) actually installing stuff.

Then again, you can so easily run into trouble like Khaosman has.. oil tee fitting broke off in his block, and he had to pull his engine.

Estimate 2 weeks, plan for 6 of being without your car in any functional state.

very much a better safe than sorry situation.

ouch... that makes me not want to do it as much... i really don't want to do anything too risky... if bolt ons are going to maintain higher reliability then maybe i should go with that... iono... i still can't decide exactly wut i wanna get out of this car, whether it be a savage little sleeper or just a nice clean car that has a little power under the foot... know wut i mean?

The kit i have is no longer made because the company is out of business.

I wish I had kept my kit..but alas Maxx Mazda has it now. He'll put it to good use this summer running 15 to 18 psi :)

If you're worried about putting an extra 1 or 2 thousand down on a turbo, do not get it. Instead spend 500 to 1 thousand on n/a bolt-ons and be done with it.

1-2 thousand? try more like 3000-4000

Dude install that MBC yourself... a toddler could do it.

oh i would, but i have to go to ken's this sunday anyway, need to fix a gasket leak and some additonal things, i would rather pay him to do it. anything to help his business i would do it.

I was looking at protegegarages manifolds' and saw this (OBX Stainless Steel Turbo Manifold - Protege) now what do you think the advantages would be compaired to the one that is part of the highboost turbo kit for the 2.0 on the same website? I'm trying to get as much HP out of everything I can when I get back from being out here.

If I'm correct you would not be able to use the OBX manifold on the HiBoost kit. I don't know why you'd want to try either -the HiBoost kit comes with everything you'd need. The OBX is pretty much just a generic turbo manifold with a flange to fit the Protege.

I thought that it maybe would look better and maybe perform better then the cast iron manifold that comes with the kit

Look better, yes. But you'd have to have a downpipe custom made and maybe even have to alter the intercooler piping to make it work. IMO, not worth it just for looks.

yeah I figured there would be alot of work involved just to make it fit and yeah your right definitely not worth it

if you can, keep with a specific kit. Everything's meant to fit, so you shouldn't have to worry in that area. It's more expensive, but never build a turbo kit on a tiny budget :)

my budget definitely isn't small but when it comes to turbos I have no idea what the hell to do with it, well i kinda do but not enough knowledge to do it on my own car lol. I'm just wondering if the highboost package from protegegarage is worth it. you know what I'm saying?

of course!

If you have a manual p5, Hiboost is prettymuch the only kit that's still available new. If you're serious about boosting and want to be able to adjust fuel maps, etc, then Hiboost w/its Haltech computer would work well for you. Others go for the stock MSP turbo if they just want to set it and forget it so to speak.
