Turbocharging a protege?

protege 2002
Not long ago a friend of mine who is a crack in cars, turbocharged his car. I'm planning on putting a lil'bit of money on my car so i was thinking on putting a new engine from Japan but he told me that it was impossible with my car since it's a 2002. Now he offered me to turbocharge my car for less then 3000$. So I went to a garage for my exhaust line and i spoke to the dude there and he told me that it would be a pain in my ass more then anything to turbo my ride. First he said that it would be impossible to turbo under 3000$ cause there's a piece that i have to chance on my cataliser close to my engine that cost like 1500$(my friend said i didn't need that piece though). Now i've seen some protege LX 2002 trubo charged and it wasn't a MSP. My question is, would it be worth it to turbo charge my car keeping in mind that i need this car to be reliable since i drive to school with it and i need a car to go anywhere from where i live?

Here is fine - you can turbo a 2002 Protege, I know - because I did it. Quite a few options out there. Start searching. My setup was a FlyingMiata/FlyingProtege log style exhaust manifold, t3/.60, MPI piggyback, and extra injectors before the TB. Tuned for 7psi, started seeing up to 11psi and didn't want to turn it down, blew my engine. Needed/wanted speed - bought a 350Z new, and then traded my protege for a WRX used.

There are better cars out there for modding, but if you want to do your protege - keep it around 5-7psi and you should be fine and end up with a nice little sleeper.

ok so you think that if i don't beat the s*** out of my car, it will still stay reliable and won't have to be looking at it parked in my drive-way right?

if you want to go beyond about 5-7 psi, you need to put new rings, pistons, rods, gaskets, and oil system in the motor. then, you need to rebuild the tranny with a limited slip diff and preferrably stronger gears. then, the kit involves a manifold, compressor, downpipe, intercooler, piping, fuel and engine management, injectors, etc.

boost is all about how much money you want to drop into it and if you want to kid yourself into thinking that you can keep the boost below 5 psi, go ahead, but it turns into a drug that hooks you into wanting more. guaranteed

(iagree) Couldnt have said it any better

You can read up on my entire boost experience with a mental addiction kit, that's no longer available since they closed shop. I plucked down around $6k all told with nice gauges and a haltech e6x with tools and parts and all that. It's not going to be cheap.

Ditto on what mike said. It's like crack. I just haven't had the time to fill the addiction yet...

Check out my thread where I posted about it from the beginning. Mine is a 99 1.8liter pro.

CLick the video link in my signature and if you like, come here and have a look/ride in it.

I can discuss this at great length with you.

Google "MP5T" with safe search off for more info..

i would say that if you want to do an install right, you are looking at a good $8k. if you do the work yourself, you might be able to save a couple of grand.

$6k is a steal for a good set up

don't turbo your protege
I don't know.. I love my Protege, but I will say that if you can simply afford to buy a fast car with the money you plan to put into the protege.. then yes..

at this point, that's pretty much true. Cheap cars are much faster than the proteges were in their day. The new MS3 has so much power for a front drive it's ridiculous.

Nah. A turboed Protege is unique and will surprise the hell out of people. I love my turboed Protege. Can't imagine life without her. Well worth the money

true, it does surprise quite a lot of people. Especially those SUVs that think their torque will leave you behind ;)
