Turbo XS racepipe to Mazdaspeed catback ???

Bolting the turbo xs racepipe up the mazdaspeed catback exhaust, do I need to use the adapter plate that came with it? You put the donut gasket and for that one spot in the exhaust it won't be 3". I was wondering because it looks like you could bolt it up without the plate, just wondering if there would be any issues?

I read before I got mine that the Mazdaspeed exhaust is the only one or at least one of the only ones you couldn't bolt right up to. I think they may have changed the design sicne then but don't hold me to that.
