Turbo Warm Up and Cool Down procedures?

This would be my first turbo car if I get the CX-7. My question is, i've always been told that you cannot just turn on the car and go, nor can you pull up to your destination and turn off the car. On turbo cars, you need to give the car atleast 5 minutes to let the oil cool down so it doesn't seize or gum up in the turbo. Does this same mentality apply to the CX-7's blower?

You can turn your car on and go. If you do indeed do that just make sure your not making the turbo work untill its properly lubed with oil and warm....

What about shut-down? Shouldn't you let it cool down? I mean if all turbos work the way i've been told, then it should atleast be advised and touched on in the owner's manual to let the car cool down slightly. Don't just shut it off.

Yeah I wouldn't jump on the gas anyhow. Again, i haven't gotten it yet, just wondering first.

The turbo is water-cooled, nothing to worry about. If you want, you can wait 30 sec before turning the engine off if you're really beating on it. :)

Its should say that in the visor, check it. But its good to give at least 30secs to cool down.

When cold started, just like any engine, wait until operating temperature is set, more like a minute at least should be good.

Okay cool, thanks guys!

I can't check the visor cause I don't have the car yet lol.

So if its water-cooled, then its a little different than most turbo-setups. I would assume thats better than having the oil setup.

This is right from the manual:

The turbocharger greatly enhances engine power. Its advanced design provides improved operation and requires minimum additional maintenance. To get maximum performance from your turbocharged engine, take note of the following tips:
  • The turbocharged engine is designed for optimal operation with premium unleaded gasoline (page 4-2). Do not use fuel with a lower octane rating. Extra fuel additives are NOT recommended.

  • Change the engine oil and filter using the turbo engine interval outlined in the maintenance schedule (for your driving condition).

  • Use only the recommended engine oil (page 8-12). Extra oil additives are NOT recommended.

  • After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine at least 30 seconds to cool the turbo before turning off the engine. Avoid simply shutting the engine off abruptly after a hard or long drive. Damage to the turbocharger may result.

  • Don't race or over-rev the engine when starting. This should not be done with ANY engine, especially not with one that's turbocharged.

  • Do not add any aftermarket devices to alter the engine's ignition timing, fuel delivery, or turbo boost pressure. This may lead to serious engine damage and may void your warranty.

Me personally... I live in a suburban area, so once I get into my neighborhood I make sure to stay at slower speeds and not engage the turbo (rev over 2500 RPMs)... in other words, drive it like a pussy cat. Driving like this for just a few blocks provides enough cool down by the time I get into my driveway. Same thing with parking lots. Just drive slow (you should anyway).
