Turbo problems

This week-end we finished the turbo install. Problem after problem after problem. Well after we got it on finally, and fixed all the leaks. I went for the FIRST ride to try it out, and no boost. We looked through everyhting over and over again. So finally we pulled the turbo off and the center shaft is moving around in the housing. So I will send it back today and get another one..... Would this be consider the person that put this together is at fault, or me??? Because the first time I started it up it was smoking REALLY BAD... That had to do with the center shaft going out and the oil was leaking out of the turbo through the exhaust... Well hopefully in a couple of days I will get another turbo and it will work right... Wish me LUCK

It's rebuilt, I am not understanding this. This guy is saying that I over-spooled it I do not think so, because I made sure the turbo had oil in it and the line going to the turbo had oil in it. After that I hooked it up and it was smoking, and it would never spool. The rebuild kit for it is 480.00 How much is a new T-28. The reason that I want to run the T-28 is I want to see how much faster it spools up. Also my car is fabricated for the T-28, o2 housing and back and the manifold, all I have to do is install the turbo..... I am wondering if the guy is trying to screw me over because he has not even scene the turbo yet and he is saying that I over-spooled it, ok how do you over-spool your turbo when it won't even go into boost??? Any help is appreciated, I am really starting to hate this ******* turbo rebuild guy:mad:

That's what I tought. With a rebuilt turbo, you never know if it rebuilt correctly until you get it on your car..... and sometime it's realy not fun to see how it work.

Sorry for you Mike, I hope you will find a not to expensive solution to your problem. Good luck!

Hey chdesign didn't you have a T-28 on your Protege', if so how did you like it?

Yes the rebuild turbos suck ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My car would come out of boost whenever i let off the gas turbos are throttle dependant....or I shoudl say load dependant. I'm not knocking FI turbos are awesome for those who want to worry and tinker with their cars all teh freaking time!!!!!!! I think you all know where i stand on FI and NA debate i mean look at my sig. lol as for all you :'( babys out there with your broke turbos i hate to say it but I TOLD YOU SO....kinda funny that one of the FI moderators is NA isn't it......well not really look at Keith from FM he works for FM and has a built NA Miata. I will help you turbo guys as much as i can i may just put in my .02 everyonce in a while don't take it personally. ;)

mmmm... help us, he can

Most people with turbo setups (or any mod for that matter) mess with their cars all the time because they can, because they want to, and because they are tweakers at heart. Always looking for that last bit of HP, that one more pound of boost, or that extra ounce of reliability. Then there 's the type who are always messing with it and chasing their tails because of an ill conceived system, or off the wall HP expectations that lead to bad decisions (lets crank the boost up to 20psi and see how she fly's...).

Cry baby's? I haven't heard any cry baby's on this forum. Just a varied cross section of people with different setups, different ideas, and sometimes problems. With the wide difference in technique and setup execution, you get some people that are successful, and some that aren't. On one side you have the reasonable and well engineered BEGI/FM setup. Are they tweaking it? Yes, because they want too. Does it work? Yes, supposedly quite well. Will it be reliable? My bet is yes. Then you have the Spoolin camp. He has a highly modified and more complex setup. Is it working? Yes. Is he tweaking? Yes, because he's a tweaker. Is it reliable? Who knows, he's always tweaking! Finally you have the brave souls that run 10+PSI non intercooled and with no fuel management. All I can say here is, thanks for contributing to the destructive testing portion of the Rn'D process!

Ch. For whatever reason you chose to go N/A. Cool! Run with it! I check the forum all the time in anticipation of your results. I can't wait to see what you can squeeze out of these FS motors. You have good ideas and a respectful amount of knowledge. But the tone of all your responses regarding Forced Induction are that of a person who is jealous, and has something to prove. You have nothing to prove! Hot N/A setups are great (and most of the time just as UN-reliable as F/I). F/I setups are great too.

If you have an answer to somebody's question, it can be answered w/out continuously injecting too much opinion, or a, "see, I told you so!" mentality. It makes your knowledge appear less valid and strays from the persons question.

This is a neat forum and we are lucky to be here witnessing many first time mods and ideas to a car with almost zero aftermarket support. We're seeing allot of grass roots engineering and its exiting to hear what people are coming up with. N/A, F/I, CAI, headers, high compression, porting, talk of 200MPH salt flat monsters... We have the rare opportunity to see it from the ground up. Lets let it go, watch it grow, and see what comes of it all.

If you have a valuable answer to a question. Answer it! Period.

Dude I'm just being sarcastic and playing around. Most the people on here know that. I didnt' mean to upset anyone or anything and sorry if I did. To tell you the truth I have though about F/I again but at the moment I'm not going to be able to do much with my car as me and my wife are trying to buy a house....oh yeah BTW got some dyno numbers with the pistons and everything so far it looks like 135.2 whp and 146.4 ft lbs of torque and thats without any tuning.

Damn. Post the Dyno Sheets on that man! I could only get about 120 WHP with the FS-ZE, and the advanced timing of the MP3.....Oh..You also have the adjustable cam gears, and a little higher compression. Give those Civics Hell! (laugh)

Great post Tonpow (thumb)

Although I love anything that involves a turbo...I also love horsepower and all related methods of creating it...So whether you are going for a killer NA setup or a sweet F/I system...Im sure the site loves to read about it (myself included)So keep it up guysno matter what setup your runninghave fun and post about it!!! :D

Thats with the pistons and a few mods tot he FPR by GMP to lower the fuel pressure to lean it out a bit. I have another set of the pistons I got two sets through some trades and whatnot. My header goes on this weekend so that number should go over 140!!! so for a lightly tuned NA protege just scratching the surface thats pretty good i think. I'm very positive I can get it over 160 HP once I get an E-Manage then its back to FI for me with a roots blower and make one hell of a street machine.

If you can get around 160HP at the wheels NA, I think I would have to jump the NA bandwagon. Figuring on about a 18% drivetrain loss (which might be quite conservative), thats well over the 180HP at the crank that I would be completely satisified with. Good job chdesign. I can't wait for your eManage to be purchased and installed and tuned! ;)

Ok this is bullsh!t

Ok everyone with a turbo, are you guys tapping into the back of the engine at the oil pressure sensor. I did and I am using a (I think it is a 3/8 of an inch brake line). The guy that took my turbo apart says that I started it with out any oil in the turbo, which I made sure that oil was coming out of the line, by disconnecting the spark plugs so the engine would turn over to push the oil to the turbo without starting the car. He said that where I hooked the oil line to there may be to much pressure coming from there and if ****** up the seals in the turbo. I think that it is :bs: because chdesign ran his from there on a T-25 and had no problems. I think that spoolin and Big Ben ran theres the same way. Tell me what you guys think. I am pissed I have to fork out another 480.00 dollars to get this mother fixed. The total that I will be spending on this rebuilt turbo is about 1100.00 dollars.:bs: :bs: :bs:

I can't tell him not to rebuild it because I am putting my car in the NOPI nationals and it is only 9 days away. I am supposed to leave this Friday, this turbo project suxs... I think that is why God invented beaters.(pissed) (argh) (argh)
