I was driving on the highway, going a little hard on the car when i see a flash of light (it was 2am) and then smoke bellowing out of the hood. my car lost all power and i coasted to the side of the highway. i jumped out to take a look when i see there was a small fire under my car.. i also saw a trail of oil where it just dumped from my car. i was able to start my car but since i wasnt sure what happened i shut it right off. Im guessing its the turbo that exploded.. but im not reallly sure.. i would like to be able to do it myself and not take it to a mechanic.. does this sound like the turbo? i figured the car wouldnt start up if it was the piston.

ouch, that sounds really bad. Post pics of the bay. trail of oil leads me to a blown motor. but that's just me. definitely post pics man

well the car started up. (it only was on for half a second and i shut it right back down..) its sitting at my parents house right now.. so ill get pictures of it when i go back.. it melted the engine cover also..

this is not what i wanted to hear you guys.. :'( ill try to get pictures of the engine.. i didnt see anything that stuck out to me as not being good.. like i said the engine cover had a hole melted in it but i took the cover off and saw nothing.. anywhere..

Turbos don't explode they can however throw out bearings and seals into the oil system, or they can crack and spray oil all over the manifold and start a fire

the cracked turbo sounds more like what might have happened.. the turbo from the top looks fine, but the oil looks like it dumped from the bottom.

just a question.. im looking at turbos on protege garage.. first off bad idea? i know my manifold was crap but will the turbo be low quality as well? also i see 28 and the 28rs.. while im changing my turbo should i go ahead and upgrade it to the rs? im all stock except headers and soon adding CAI and IC and corksport exhaust.. opinions would be great!

order through crossover auto. guaranteed shipping times and solid communication. don't gamble with protege garage. Im curious how your cover melted. Check to be sure the oil return line is tight and not leaking. Several people have run the t28 on stock internals, however you do have to be a little careful since it will flow more air than the stock t25 and you not having a tune

kicks and giggles i wanted to show my melted cover.. idk how it melted like that..

and this is the bottom of my hood where it caught fire for a second..once again idk how it would have done that...

i wasnt sure if the pictures were showing up in my first post.. so the links are the same thing..

i would take out the turbo and see how it looks, the manifold does have residue on it as if oil got on it. does the engine all look normal under neath, like the oil pan and crank case? When you turned it back on did it sound normal? if it throw a rod it would sound awful so you would of defiantly noticed

oh... it sounded horrible when i started it up... and the oil looks like it is everywhere... mainly on the turbo though... im really tempted to take it to a mechanic but me and my friend want to do it ourselves.. so ill plan on taking out the turbo and checking that out. also i wanna try pouring oil into the engine to see where it leaks.. any other ideas?

Thanks you guys for being soo helpful.. im really stressed out about this situation i am in.. you guys are helping me through it! lol

okay. im planning on taking the engine and all that out soon.. i kinda figured it threw a rod because of the oil dumping out.. im kinda looking at how to take the engine out and other engines that fit in for an engine swap.. but idk how hard it would be.. i saw street unit sells a engine block i can customize..(rods and pistons ect.) any other ideas of places to looks? i know street unit is expensive and over priced.. if i do the mazdaspeed protege engine id want better rods and pistons.. any ideas would be appreciated!

All 2.0 protgs use the same engine, only difference is the main bearing support plate and the turbo stuff, all internals are the same.

You can ways get a junkyard block and get forged internals and build it yourself for cheaper

clean the oil off n look for any holes on the block and check all turbo oil lines and the return line under the turbo(it goes from the metal fitting to the engine block then if all is OK add new oil and have ur friend start it up DO NOT REV IT if its noisy. if it idles quiet look for a leak if its noisy shut it off n get a new engine...

so i should just get a used one and not a new one? =/ i just dont want to go through this again.. haha

i guess when i started it up it didnt have any oil.. i see that could be the reason it is so loud.. that is a good idea whatusername! thank you to everyone who is helping!
