hello guys, i haven't been on here, in a while so here i am. having some interest in my car a lil more than before. So i decided to do some work try to gain confidence to work on my car, so i have a k&n cold air intake, and seeing all the rain in vancouver, im not sure if the puddles are deep enough to work about, but i decided to try to do it myself, and try to convert the cold air intake, into a short ram air intake. so i did that with a little bit of help, but i was wondering. if there is a large difference in hp or any type of gain. from um cold air intake, to short ram air intake.

just curious what are your opinions guys.
 
youll get better mpg with the short ram and it will sound louder. why the hell is mine still CAI? i should change that lol.

Now thats a first.... I noticed no difference in power/gas mileage when I went from CAI to SRI on both my old P5 and MSP.
 
Not sure for our P5's but on my old Ford Probe with a similar 2.0 mazda motor. There was a slight heavier pull at lower rpms with a short ram, and more pull at higher rpms with the cai. Some guy at a dyno shop told me why but i'm not sure myself.
 
Wats dif from CAI and short ram. And which one is more money.

A CAI has longer tubing, so the filter sits closer to the ground and can put you at risk for hydrolock. Generally, a CAI is more expensive than an SRI because it's longer (i.e. more metal needed to make it).

As someone said before, K&N, AEM, & Injen are the big names, but CorkSport, Cobb, Simota, and others also make intakes for Mazdas. I installed an AEM SRI on my old Protege (you can see a pic if you follow the link in my sig), and there were noticeable gains in power and throttle response, especially around 3-4k rpm. I also noticed a slight increase in fuel economy (I'm talking like 1 mpg highway).
 
CAI is always more than Short ram. The short ram is....well...short lol - Just a couple peices and the filter sits in the engine bay. The cold air intake is longer and the filter generally sits somewhere in the splash guard area in the front of the drivers wheel well (for proteges at least).

Also for those talking about power sound etc, I went with AEM short ram and for me there was a noticeable bump in performance as well as a nice deep note under heavy to medium acceleration.

Also, about puddles etc, some makes (AEM I know of for sure) makes a bypass valve for CAI so that if you intake starts to suck water the extra resistance opens the valve connected to the tubing in the engine bay and allows it to breath from the engine bay until you are out of the water.

unless you find yourself daring enough to drive through 1 to 2 foot deep puddles, I dont bother converting my k&n cai to sri. never had a problem with the seattle rain vs the cai.
