Trip Odometer and Lights on warning

My trip odometer on my '99 miata will reset itself every time I turn off the car. No the reset button is not stuck, it will work properly while it is on but then resets to zero when the car is turned off. Also the lights on warning does not work and on occasion I have left the car with the lights on only to need a jump when I get back to it. Anybody have an idea what I can do to fix these issue which I believe are related.

maybe there is an issue with keeping power to your ecu when the car is off? If you re-set the ECU (unplug the battery then drain all power) your trip odo will reset. Maybe that is happening every time you shut your car off? (scratch)
