transmission locking up some gears randomly wtf

Its really weird, it all started after I did a little drift on a curve while I downshifted to second and floored it, after I went to third everything was fine, but then tried to go to fourth and it was locked, coulndt get in gear at all. I was a little scared thinking I broke the LSD or the whole tranny, but then noticed that second was gone too, along with reverse. Basically all the bottom gears lock up randomly for periods of time, they will lock up completely for 30 minutes or so, and the come back to normal. Usually happens when i beat on the car and floor it, while power shifting. Took it to the mechanic today, but the gears did not lock up at all, so he coulndt really diagnose the problem and ended up saying that it was the clutch. I still have my doubts tho, because the gears would get locked up so bad, that I coulnt even put the shifter on 2nd, 4th or R while the car was off (which doesnt require any clutch activity).

Its really weird, oh and also the power steering pump started to leak fluid 2 days ago. Argh

possible clutch engagement problem? Maybe the shift forks are out of wack or almost broken.
Danny how many miles are on the car and when is they last time you changed out the tranny fluid?

Ive never changed the tranny fluid, but the mechanic checked the level and said it was fine. theres 60k miles on the car.

whats weird about the clutch is that, even with the car off...it still woulndt go into those gears.

Hopefully its not the forks.

About the Power Steering leak, hopefully itll stop with new o rings. I gotta go get them at the dealer tomorrow.

UM mazda says to change the tranny fluid every 20k miles, so I'd consider that! My car has pretty much always had that problem, I've taken it to Mazda twice to have it looked at, they of course found nothing wrong, it comes and goes. It's actually WORSE often right after a trans fluid change! I don't know if its as bad as you say, but mine isn't that big of an issue after driving this car for 86k miles.

well power steering is fixed *crosses fingers*, I changed the seals and put some thick power steering oil in it and it hasnt leak since. The Squeeking is kinda there still tho :( Im trying to find out how to make it go away so it can be as quiet as it was before.

Also get a new clutch on monday, Im gonna try to get it on the car asap.

Ok, the pump is not leaking anymore, however, the annoying squeal that goes along when I accelerate is still there. The car used to be quiet before it started leaking, any ideas?

Power steering fluid? Our cars use ATF MIII (DEXRON 3) auto trans fluid for the power steering...check shop manual...

wtf? are you serious?

...but yeah, I changed the clutch yesterday to an Exedy Stage 1, and the car runs perfect. No more shifting from 1st to 3rd, 3rd to 5th anymore :-D
or pushing the car back with my hands to reverse.

Yep, straight from the factory shop manual. Good to hear you got the tranny problem fixed though.

no wonder when it was leaking the liquid was red, but when I poored new fluid in it was actually yellowish.
Daymn, u think I should flush it and fill it all up with tranny fluid?

well...after a new clutch, and some driving around town the gear locking is still there :( I thought maybe the fluid wasnt good enough (the shop used bad oil gear after the clutch was in), so I went and flushed it and put some royal purple gear oil, but the gears still lock every now and then :(
Its so annoying, it feels like when I beat on the car it happens, also when ive been driving for a while, or the most common is if I take a sharp turn.

Im beggining to think my tranny is about to die :(

Hmmm, Royal Purple probably was not the way to go, most of us that have used it did nopt have the greatest results. I can vouch for Redline MT-90, I've been using it since about 25,000 miles and I'm at 50,000+. I doubt the fluid is the problem though, but you never know.

I wanted to put Redline in it, but coulndt find any local retailers that had it in stock.

I doubt its the fluid causing the linkage to not go in the lower gears.. Its more than likely something inside your trans.. I doubt you'll need a new one unless you feel like opening up your own trans..
