Torque Steer Almost Killed Me!

I am no stranger to torque steer, but I got caught off guard and I thought I would pass it along. It just might keep something nasty from happening to one of you (yes, I really do care).

The scene: I am boppin along the freeway in the left lane, traffic is not heavy, but there are plenty of cars around. I come to the intersection with a cross freeway that has a left exit flyover. The exit is totally empty so I signal, downshift, and punch it for a little rampin' fun. I have driven this exit many times in several different cars, but this is the first time I tried to really get it on in the MS3.

The problem: There is a slight transition bump between the concrete freeway and the asphault exit. When my left tire hits the bump, the torque imbalance between the two front wheels just about rips the steering wheel out of my hand! The car dives back to the right toward the traffic, and worse yet, heads me straight towards the concrete gore point dividing the exit from the freeway. Obviously, since I am writing this, I managed to gather it together and get it pointed into the exit and avoid the concrete K-rail on either side. Got my attention though! I'll be ready the next time.

This beastie takes some learning!

doesn't the MS3 have an LSD?
Yes it does, and that makes this situation worse. There was no wheel slipping, just massive steering input from the wheel that got the bump.

Wow, that would of a been one messed up MS3 afterwards, glad you're okay.

What, you didn't get the special MS-no-slip / anti-torquesteer gloves with the red stitching? I never drive without them. (spin)

Ooh, great idea! I'm making some right now out of a pair of Mechanix gloves from my garage. The red stiching will contrast well with the white letters on the back. (lol2) Pictures soon...

I had the same thing happen in my MSP, except that I was racing. Wasnt thinking that I had one wheel on conrete and one on the black crap. Wheel yanked hard but I was able to catch it before I hit the Spec-V next to me.

high powered FWD FTL

yeah, cars like these DO need some white knuckling... happened to me when I drove an ms3

while shifting with his third leg lol

when you plan to accelerate hard, you should shift, reposition your hand on the wheel, then accelerate... especially with a fwd!

Always funny after the fact when our cars give us a reminder of what they can do. I have launched myself off 2 or 3 abrupt grade changes (whoopty-dos??), once in the middle of a corner.
Glad you pulled it together.

My eclipse is always good for moments like that. Manual steering, KAAZ clutch type LSD, and 310 ft-lbs of torque... with no boost cut, e-throttle, or equal length halfshafts to help things. I love the car though, it communicates every pebble and crack in the road back to your hands. I got so used to the torque steer in it that I actually didnt notice how bad it really was till we got this new car. After I drive my eclipse, the MS3 has no torque steer. I actually find myself steering too far to the left when I hit the gas in the MS3, I'm correcting for the torque steer that's not there. Takes some getting used to. The car does get some nasty torque steer accelerating hard over braking bumps or pot holes though, I think on that stuff it's actually worse than my eclipse, cause the eclipse has no traction on that stuff. The suspension is too stiff.
